I made a mount for my GPS that works great for me so I thought I might share it if anyone is interested. It keeps the GPS in a convenient location but does not block the view from the windshield. You can quicly remove it if you do not want to use it.
I took a 3' piece of 1" wide x 3/16" thick steel stock and cut a short piece to slide under the base of my center console. I bent it upright and angled it so it just clears the console latch. I drilled and tapped 2 holes and installed 1/4" bolts for studs. I used threaded knobs to hold the upright piece of steel in place. I used a 1/4" bolt and large fender washer underneath to secure it to the floor.
I used the mount that came with my GPS and modified it to attach to the upright steel mount I made. I also twisted the steel to angle the GPS toward the driver.
I also added a cell phone holder just under the GPS so my cell phone is also conveniently located. Since my power outlet is directly behind my mount I can use my charger without having wires hanging all over the place.
I made the base mount short so that if I do not want to use the upper part I can quickly remove it, leaving the base part out of the way and almost unnoticeable.
I will try to post pictures here if I can figure it out, but if they don't make it you can see them in my Readers Rigs album.
BTW - I use the HP iPAQ RX5915 Travel Companion which has the TomTom GPS. This is a pretty neat unit, with PDA, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth and a lot of other features. I had heard some negatives about the TomTom GPS but I am very satisfied with it. I have used many others including Garmin, Magellan, & DeLorme and each has its own quirks but they all work well. To me the TomTom is as good as the rest.
