Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting Remington 1100 Question

Picture of the day

HTML:
Ever try to correct someone's grammar, particularly online?

Almost every day here at work. A couple of the supervisors I work with were foreign born and although their "American" is much better than my Polish most of their documents need some "polishing" and that's no pun intended. Their content is good, but I just can't allow some of their stuff to go to a customer (or management).

I had to look up pariah because I can't say I've ever run past that one before.

Proper spelling, the ability to put together a coherent sentence, correct grammar - these are not only fading rapidly, but apparently despised by most people.

Ever try to correct someone's grammar, particularly online? You get someone who is so utterly incapable of putting a sentence together that you can't really decipher what they're asking, and the moment you point out the person might like to correct his writing and the whole online world accuses you of being some kind of elitist snob.

Murdering the Queen's English has become "cool". Just like being "bad at math. " Therefore, anyone who cares about matters of form is a pariah.

My oldest teenage daughter comes unglued when I do it. I don't mind much as my purpose isn't to be her best friend.

Correcting someone's spelling or grammar may end up hurting their self esteem and destroy their self worth. I'm kidding of course. That's the way our society is these days though. IMHO, that kind of nonsense is contributing to our decline.

It all goes back to home life if you took the time to teach your kids then they will follow in that path. But with so many people having to have both parents work taking that time has become a thing of the past.

Then the parents blame the schools that their kids are not what they expect. Again the parents dont take the time for what ever reason. The schools cant do it all but are the first ones to be blamed.

The wife and I took time to read to the kids if nothing more than a bedtime story and correcting them was something that we did and it worked. I'm not one to be telling anyone how to speak or construct a thought on paper I never had to do it for a living and hope that I never do have to convey my thoughts in a concise manner for someone else to read and then relate what was written and then act on the written word. As you have seen on this site I'm not the one that should be taking any credit for what our kids have become. If anything I have given them the work values and the wife gave them the brains as she has them all for us as a couple.

But taking the time to just read to the kids will do wonders we still read to the kids just a different bunch of kids

That's what I don't understand. I'd rather be corrected than go through life not knowing what an idiot I am.

Have people really become so fragile that correcting grammar hurts their feelings?

-Ryan

Unfortunately, yes!

I don't don't care if I do or don't. I will continue to enforce this in my home.

NO exuse for lazyness.

I received this in an email back in '07 and have since, lost the image... It took me a couple days of frustration searching Google and email archives to find it again.

mwilson's post reminded me of this and I just had to share it with y'all (proper grammar aside lol!!) :-laf

y u all be h8in?

Apparently this passes for communication in some of the lower tribes. I get a kick out of some of the kids pounding out text messages on their phone so fast their thumbs blur. I casually tell them, " You know you can even TALK on that?". I am always met with a blank stare.

This grammar stuff has been going on for a long time. I went to school in Britain in the 1930s, being taught English grammar in class in the morning, and then at midday going home for lunch and reading the daily newspaper, the bad grammar displayed there would give us pupils maybe 6 of the Best with a cane, or at least one, and a warning. A cardinal sin was to use the letters, 'and' or 'but' to start a sentence, today leading publications start sentences and paragraphs with And and But. (wonder why anyone worries about it). seems as long as the message can be understood its accepted. Pointing out grammar mistakes probably gives some a superiority complex.

The lack of face to face communication that goes with texting bother's me. Even "The internet" can certainly absorb some of the blame.

On-line and texting allows people to somewhat hide themselves from the person they're communicationg with.

Face to face, voice to ear takes more concentration because your're reading the face, eyes and mouth. The alternative method of communication keeps all the important stuff locked away.

Someone metioned earlier that " All we will do is grunt and draw in the dirt " to communicate isn't all that far off from becoming reality.

I feel that technology has hurt us in many ways. It has made the world so small that if someone in the middle east farts the price of gas goes up in the U. S. . I kind of like leading an old life style(as I sit and type on my computer on the Net) I wrote a PM to a member about the same thing.

What was wrong with the old ways of life. You work and barter system wasn't so bad. If I needed some Gunsmithing done Greg and HH would do it in return for me plowing their field. If they needed some metal moved from the train to their shop. The gang and I could do it in return for the smithing. Same with food clothing and a host of other things that technology has given us to easy and for some the system has made WORK a thing of the past. Just let the others pay for everything.

Now that I can I may work twice as hard physically as I did in my modern day job. But our lifestyle has slowed and most of the time (NOT ALL) a more calm life. :-laf I made myself laugh at that one
