The Night before Christmas

Like "rolling coal" ??

OK hopefully you guys can get back to the black smoke stories soon ;) Just a few more words on the topic of ulsd. .

Granted things the EPA says should be taken with some grain of salt... .

Here are some of the concerns with the emissions and problems ULSD aims to help. . Note that on some of the ailments they say 'believe' to cause etc... they are not set in stone, but are likely.

"Even with more stringent heavy-duty highway engine standards set to take effect in 2004, these engines will continue to emit large amounts of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, both of which contribute to serious public health problems in the United States. These problems include premature mortality, aggravation of respiratory and cardiovascular disease, aggravation of existing asthma, acute respiratory symptoms, chronic bronchitis, and decreased lung function. Numerous studies also link diesel exhaust to increased incidence of lung cancer. We believe that

diesel exhaust is likely to be carcinogenic to humans by inhalation and that this cancer hazard exists for occupational and environmental levels of exposure. "

Here's the general idea on just how much diesels contribute to the problem...

"We estimate that heavy-duty trucks and buses today account for

about one-third of nitrogen oxides emissions and one-quarter of

particulate matter emissions from mobile sources. In some urban areas, the contribution is even greater. This program will reduce particulate matter and oxides of nitrogen emissions from heavy duty engines by 90 percent and 95 percent below current standard levels, respectively. "

Here are some projected benefits - they are pretty significant. .

"The clean air impact of this program will be dramatic when fully

implemented. By 2030, this program will reduce annual emissions of nitrogen oxides, nonmethane hydrocarbons, and particulate matter by a projected 2. 6 million, 115,000 and 109,000 tons, respectively. "

hmm lets see... ... good economy or clean air... . i will take good economy so i can by my 40K trucks in the future. lightman what paid for your 40K pickup?

Catcracker you won't see any noticeable loss in fuel economy with ULSD.

If you mean the US economy... . ULSD isn't really going to affect it much...

As for what paid for my $44k truck... ? Whattya think? Sellin lots of lights ;)

mild smoking

I smoked a P-joke yesterday and it felt good.....

I am taking the scenic route to lunch (have to entertain some bigwigs from HQ), so I get on I-25 South and then get off on I-80 east. As I am merging onto 80, I see a black PSD in the fast lane coming up quick, so I get up to speed, pass him, get around some pokies, then settle into the slow lane quite a bit ahead of him at the posted limit (75mph).

Well, old P-joke owner wasn't so happy with my little display, so I see him coming up in my sideview mirror hauling serious butt at about 90. Right when he's about at my rear bumper, I nail it.

He gains on me less and less, and then the CTD does it's thing, and off I go, leaving him nothing but vapors and a "how-the-heck-did-a-Dodge-beat-me" idea to chew on. I looked down and saw one-oh-five..... CRAP! I managed to scrub off some speed and avoid unnecessary incarceration. Gotta love the brakes on the '02s.

Smoke stories, gun stories

Well, I just finished reading most all the posts and I would say that from it all there are a few folks out there with some heart left. I don't want the West Coast to drown like the Horseman, but I don't want to be a "nice guy" like Lightman. Thats For Sure. If you can't flex your diesel muscle a bit, even in the form of smoke, whats the use? I love the smoke stories and it is worth the carbon it takes to produce them. Louie Lamour stories are the same, now we have Cummins instead of Colts. Men need to have "battles" sometimes, albeit machines against machines. Even our wives and girlfriends can see how much we need it in the stories. We should all read "Wild at Heart" by John Eldredge and then go out an do some diesel driving. Keep the stories coming and get a bit of juices flowing.

CAT... . Honeywell was the one I was talking about. It blew just after I move out of there up to Shreveport. Exxon goes about every 6 months it seems and there's usually one or 2 others up in there that go. Remember when Kaiser Alum went a few years ago? Big stink about that one and the EPA was all over the place down there. I've lived in Baton Rouge all my life and worked in the industrial construction industry a lot. Like CAT said... if the greens have their way, the corridor from the corner of the LA "boot" along the Mississippi Rv. to New Orleans will be a wasteland. Because of this save the planet mentality, several plants have already laid people off and there's bound to be more to come. Hard working AMERICANS are now on unemployment, or have left the state to find work elsewhere all because of the pain in the arse POS tree-huggers and the politicians that pine to them. That's why I'm a fan of states rights... get the politicians out of the loop and out of a job for a change and put the people to work.

Slips my mind...

I'm failing to see how ULSD is going to negatively effect the market. Someone is going to have to make it, some engineers are working on how to make a diesel engine cope with low sulfur. Us poor saps are going to have to buy it, I doubt any of us will be parking our trucks. Seems like ULSD is creating jobs (Cummins design) will create jobs to make the stuff. Am I missing something? Or do people have to start screaming 'tree hugger' when something comes along that could help the environment and it something that they fully don't understand? I don't fully understand it. Now if its going to cause problems with my current Cummins that's bad. I was already going to trade up for a new one every 15 years, I don't wanna have to get one more frequent than that. :D

For one thing Lightman, tell me this. How is ULSD going to effect my 2000 24V Cummins. Will I have to buy sulfur additive? If so, I hope Stanadyne is already working on adding sulfur content to their 'performance formula. ' That way I'll still only be adding one additive to my fuel. Not two separate bottles.

Gotta love beating up on a powerchoke tho :-laf

Well, there weren't any bigiwigs in the truck- just me. And I don't have enough for to belch smoke at that speed-- just an EZ and 2s.

So I got to wax a p-joke AND be environmentally conscious:rolleyes:

On this ULSD rabbit trail...

ULSD will be much ado about nothing. It won't destroy your engine, and it won't make diesel cost a fortune.

Sulphur in itself doesn't do anything special for your engine. It's just that removing it with present processes also removes some lubricity from the fuel. A lot of us run additives already, so no big deal here.

Heck, they might mix in some biodiesel to get the lubricity back (all it takes is like a 5% bio blend). As long as mileage is about the same, I see no downside to ULSD.

Let's face it, ULSD is coming no matter what, so don't lose any sleep over it. Just prepare for it.

Back to the smoke stories!!!:)

There I was stopped at a light in the left lane of a divided highway. I has 5-6 cars behind me and no one in the right lane because that lane ended about 500 feet after the light. Well along comes a kid in a souped up VW GTI with all of the usual wings, stickers and 6" tailpipe. He even had the upside down tennis hat cocked to the side. Well as you could imagine, I have waited a long time for a moment like this! :D I started to creep forward a foot or two and he started to rev up his engine thinking he is going to blow my doors off. Well, the light went green and he took off with a little burn out. I kept him, with his door about next to my front bumper, while I was trying to build up enough boost to floor it with out blacking out the entire road. By now he thought he was going to win so I said the H@ll with this and let him have it! (Stack are temporally off and truck has tailpipe exiting in stock location) Needless to say, as I passed him like he was up on jacks, the look on his face was priceless. Lets just say with his window down he had a front row seat to the smoke Show! The smoke shut down his lane completely and he was forced to slow down on the shoulder while all of the traffic he was trying to beat had a nice clear lane to drive by him and wave.

Now I don't normally do this kind of thing, but this time I couldn't help myself. I usually spend 99% of my time trying to keep the smoke down. With the DD SM injectors and a hot day the darn thing has a hard time keeping up with traffic without leaving a trail. however, I will say that with this setup if you lock the converter in third and drag the brakes it can completely black out a road for as long as you want. Who wants to tailgate?:)

Now let's get sychronized on the terminolgy!

That's a "krauter or kraut-burner", with a "shopping cart handle", "faster-than-thou decals", and a "fart can". :-laf

Yep, some of us will never forget the first time put a fancied-up I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER box to shame. For me it was in Alabama, summertime, interstate... :D

Feller has got to do what a feller has got to do.

Let's not succumb to this defeated mentality. If we all had not stood and fought for our rights, all our guns would be gone today. The majority has been letting the environmental extremist wackos run things way too long. I just wish the current administration would get up on its feet and say NO to this stuff that clinton did.

Actually, I look forward to ULSD. When it gets here, maybe we'll see some of the neat European diesels imported to the U. S. that can't handle our 500 ppm slop that we call #2 diesel today.

Ok, on the way to mgoncalves place this morning for a little bombin/wrench turning fun on a soon new to be TDR members 12 valve I killed a Lightning!! Thats right a lightning, I am not sure of the exaxt year but would venture to say around 00, 01??? Anywho, as the story goes I was puttin along at 55 mph on the highway and noticed a lightning just in front of me in the right lane. Turned the box on (its set for kill all the time now :D ) and pulled up next to him to see if he wanted any action. He took, we ran from 55 all the way up to about 90 where I backed out. We were head to head til about 62 mph then i got full spool, 38 psi and I didnt even have time to wave bye! Got him by about 3 cars lengths, chickened out at 90 and he passed me up and wouldnt even look over to aknowledge his loss. Musta felt real bad loosing to a big stinky diesel that weighs a good 3k lbs more than his. I love this thing!!

As Hohn posted, ULSD will not affect your engine whatsoever, aside from making it run cleaner. Sulfur is a contaminant. SULFUR IS NOT A LUBRICANT. Maybe a few folks should read that last sentence over again a few times. Stanadyne does not add sulfur to their additive... . they add lubricity enhancer to compensate for the stripped lubricity: which is an effect of the sulfur removal process.

Ulsd will bring many more cool diesels over here, as Rusty has said... thats a good thing.

Rustyrod, I'm not Mr nice guy by any means... . I just don't see the use for the needless pollution... . there is no upside to it whatsoever. If you ever owned a TDI and spent 6 hours cleaning out the crap that our high sulfur fuel caused, you'd also understand.

As said above though, this probably should be discussed in a different thread... . we should leave this one to the 'smokers'... . I'm sure a different thread would draw the attention of a more intelligent crowd... .

smoken

The NW bombers there were 32 trucks going to Piers dyno day saterday. This lady in a small car pulled into the pack of us behind me. She was so close I could'nt see her face. So I did the ex brake and 5X5 and lugging it. Needlsss to say she could'nt see so she passed us on the right shoulder. This all happened just before we all were getting to the Canada border.

1400 SAT and don't mind smoking someone who really needs it. Also don't blow smoke if I can help it, and can't wait for ULSD.

So stick that in a pipe and burn it in a non-smoking, evironmentally conscious kind of way:D

Yes, I jest...

Hohn, I am right there with ya on the score..... however choose not to advertise it, as it wouldn't mean much to the empty space between most ears on this thread. Clearly my comments weren't directed at you, but you should have understood that;) As I posted above, I enjoy smoking out people that really need it as well, am not a tree hugger etc, but do see great value in ULSD. Smoke em while you can boys:D
