FYI
I broke down and called AAA as I simply don't have the time to try and fix it myself. The Green monster is off to get a set of new brake lines and probably it's 4th front end. I hope it is not a waste of money as I really enjoy the power of the truck despite the loosing battle with mother nature.
It is not pretty any more but it is paid for... :)

Well the mechanic took a look and his first reaction was... "are you sure you want to invest in this?"
I told him to tell me if there were any red flags in the frame and that I did not care about the body at this point.
He came back to say the frame was just fine but... .
One front disk is shot, the front end needs numerous parts, the brake lines are all shot, the parking brake cable is done, and he is looking to see what fixing the 3rd gear syncro would cost... .
I told him that a new truck would be in the 50's and that I wanted a price for a mechanically sound truck to return to my driveway including a new set of winter tires.
He said we may easily break into $4K...

Am I nuts to do this?

I called my sister in Montana and asked her to look around for a rust free 24v gen2... I will see how much that would be vs $4k to invest into this well loved but rusty and tired 99... . (sanity check)

If money is tight and it were my rig, Id bring it home and do the work on my own time. Brakes and brake lines are fairly simple jobs that can be done on an afternoon on a day off... . I read you are short on time but with that bieng said Im sure a nice chunk of that bill includes labor where as your labor is free... . Also, out of that 4k you have to realize a set of tires will run you upwards of 1k depending on what you buy.

In this area, you are VERY UNLIKELY to find a decent truck like yours for less then $5k. Clean, with a good body, no blowby, and new front end and 4x4 parts, it's easily going to be $6500-10,000. I sold a reg-cab long bed auto 24v in May with just under 300k on it for $5500, rebuilt title, new fender and hood. I've got a good '98 in my yard right now, QCLB, 24v, and I'm asking $7k for it, with minor body nicks, dings and peeling clear coat, and 303k on it. The engine has @ 40k on overhaul... ... 12v adds a premium, usually.

Well the green monster rides again!
The pocket is light a few K, the front end is tight again, the brakes all work, a few body holes patched where needed, and it has a fresh inspection sticker.
The truck sat a long time, look at when this thread started, but I am glad to have the rusty beast safe and legal again.
I will start a new thread regarding new issues. This should be my last day with this thread... .
Thx all for inputs
David

It always feels good to be back behind the wheel of an old ride...

Glad to hear you didnt give up on the ol girl :)

Started reading this thread and realized it was a few years old!

Made a good move David. I would have done the same. With the price of things nowdays the invest of a few K to old iron was wise.

I look forward to more from you!
