Dodge-Isuzu Diesel Joint Venture 1/2 ton

"MEGA Cab"?

Has this ever happened to you??? You are in a part of town you don't normally buy fuel in but your fuel light has been on for the last 30 miles so seeing a marquee that say's Diesel, you swing in to buy some. You pull up to the green pump and after swiping your card, you notice a funny smell and realize you just pumped about 14 gallons of unleaded into your tank. You then realize that the "Diesel" pump is one spot over and has a Yellow handle on the pump.

Color me stupid for not paying more attention but like most people, I am a creature of habit and to me, Green means Diesel!!!

I called AAA and had my truck towed to a shop that could pump out my tank and thats when the real trouble started.

The Manager at this AAA certified shop commenced to lecture me about how they were going to have to drop my tank, change my fuel filter, and flush my injectors. I calmly and rationally explained to him that since I had not compounded my error by starting and driving my truck, I was pretty sure that a pump out followed by about 30 gallons of Diesel ought to do me just fine.

He then proceeded to tell me personal horror stories about exploding engines and run away engines and a few other worst case scenarios in an attempt to sway me into paying them the $500 that all the above mentioned services would cost. I stood my ground but was forced to sign a waiver of liability before they would drain my tank. I ended up paying $110 for the pump out, disposal fee, and 10 gallons of Diesel.

I know I had about 3 gallons of Diesel in the tank when I made my mistake. I know I pumped 14 gallons of unleaded in with the diesel. they were able to remove almost 16 gallons from my tank. I figure worst case, I had about 2 gallons of diesel/unleaded mixed in my tank prior to them adding the 10 gallons of fresh diesel. I drove the truck 200 yards to the nearest pump and topped it off with diesel and then drove home.

That was a couple days ago and I can honestly say that I have not noticed any difference in the way the truck is running.

Just in case you were wondering, the Mobile station with the green pumps is on the corner of Ray and McClintock in Chandler AZ. The AAA shop was the Greulichs on the corner of 48th st and Elliot.

I feel pretty stupid about the whole thing but figure that since the manager of the mobile assured me that I wasn't the first one to do that at his station, I probably wouldn't be the last one either as he also stated that they had no intention of standardizing their pumps.

Feel free to heap a little ridicule on me... ... ... ... .

I think the diesel pumps should always be green or yellow. All other colors for gas.

If they had just pumped out what they could in the tank, then topped it off with diesel, you would have been fine. People used to use a bit of gas as an anti-gel in the winter. Not a good idea, but to do it once wouldn't be a problem. Just throw in a double shot of fuel additive that has a lubricosity improver in it.

huh, this Idiot was trying to play you for a fool, what a clown, trying to act like he wanted to clean out the injectors I bet he has no clue what that intails :)

He thought he was gonna bend you over and DRY, no LUBE :{ , you did the right thing.

Man Forrest that sucks not trying to bust you out or anything but I always just read the pump. When things like that happen to me I just try to laugh. Although I have never seen a green pump that pumped gasoline before bummer man

Our BP's here if Fl are green handled and are GAS.

I do the sniff check too. Caught myself about to do the same thing, green handle, but the sniff check caught it.

I do truck stops if at all possible and do the satelite lanes (generally way out on the end to stay out of the class 8's way). Extreme probability it is going to be diesel. I have never seen GAS at a satelite pump.

Why didnt I think of that... ... .

The sniff check I mean. I have only had my truck a little over two years but in that short time I have had to deal with several instances where a supposedly knowledgeable person at a dealership or shop has tryed to tell me something about my truck that just wasnt so... ... ..... the best one was the service writer that told me I needed to have my glow plugs changed to cure my hard starts... ... ... . It was a rotten return line which I found and changed thanks to the people who inhabit this web site.

Thanks for not making me feel any more foolish than I already did guys!!

At one of our local stations, the distributor actually pumped the in-ground diesel tank full of gasoline. A friend of mine, who drives a truck, happened to be the unlucky one who got the first taste of that gasoline in his diesel. He put over 100 gallons into his Caterpillar-powered Peterbilt 379. He drove about 50 miles and then noticed his truck starting to run hot. I don't believe any damage was done, he was back on the road in a few days.

So I don't think that gasoline would make a diesel engine "explode" but I could see it causing the engine to seize with the decreased lubricity of the fuel.

Also had a lady fill her brand new Pontiac Aztec with diesel fuel right after she bought it. LOL!

I ususally just flick open a ciragette lighter next to the nozzel. If it blows up, it's gas and I don't use it. :--)

You gotta warn us when you are going to say something like that. Now I have to clean coffee off my monitor... . :-laf :-laf

I am in the habit of reading the pump everywhere I fuel to make sure it says diesel (and making sure the nozzle / hose I get goes to the pump I read) before the nozzle goes in. I have done the sniff test before too. Around here, colors don't mean anything. You assume they do and you will be pumping gas into your diesel or vise versa.

Thank goodness the wifes truck has the small fill hole that will only accept the small gas nozzles. Otherwise, I would have mistakenly converted her truck to diesel. :--) All I ever buy is diesel except when I drive her truck (very rare).

ROTFLMAO ... ... ... ...

Best damn laugh I had had in quite a while.

Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo.

Ditto on the "sniff test"

:-laf I was in Arizona last year and pumped 1 1/2 gals of 87 0ctane gas into my rig with the green handle before I noticed the mistake. Topped off with "yellow handle" diesel and everything was Kosher. The cashier said it happens all the time with out of state customers but I still felt like a fool. Keep sniffing and read the pump.

I always look for the dirtiest handles, which almost always are diesel, and the pumps with the most spills around it, which again are almost always diesel.

Sniff test works too, but makes me feel like I am an addict. . lol.

Funny line above, the lighter trick. Brings a whole new meaning to smoking diesel huh? :-laf :-laf :-laf

the diesel pump handles around my area are any color avalable. black, yellow, red, green... take your pick... i never rely on the color of the handle...

and adding gasoline to diesel doesn't really make it act like an anti freeze [unless tha gas has some methal hydrate in it] but gas mixed with diesel will boost the diesels cetane rating a good bit [that's why VW use to recomend that in their old idi's to get them started in winter] but there are better ways of increasing the cetane rating of diesel [can be done with cyclohexanol nitrate to increase it to any value you want if you measure things out correctly - 0. 2% of fuel concentration will raise it 7 points]

I was under the impression that gas would lower the cetane not raise it?

Down here near Disneyland,I get a lot of trucks that have tasted gas from the dreaded green nozzels pumping gas  The tow companies love it.
