Hello all it's been a while since I've been on here. Because of all the snow around here I found a weak link. Its at my mechanics shop right now, he is backed up, so I am not exactly sure what is wrong yet. I was able to drive it to his shop. Didn't think it was going to make it a couple of times. I took a turn at a red light, there was a little bit of snow on the passenger side so the back tire spun a little and then grind, bang wheel hop. Got to about 30 another grind little hop. Considered pulling over but said what the hell I'm still movin, lets see if I can make it to the shop. It did a couple of more grinds on the way.

I am hoping that mabye its my rear drum brake they needed to be serviced anyway. Is it possible that a broken spring in the brake could cause something like this?

My guess is its a spider gear or something in the carrier.

I am trying to do alittle research now, and was wondering if you guys could point me in the right direction.

If its the rear and needs total replacement I might just get a whole assembly, who do you recommend?

If I do replace the whole rear is it possible to put a dana 70 or 80 out of a 3rd gen with disc brakes? I would assume if it would fit all you would have to do is swap out the master cylinder and proportioning valve??

If I just need a carrier who do you recommend?

A little info on my rig, 99 quad cab, dana 60 front, dana 70 rear, 410 gears, 35 in tires, antilock brakes, disc front drum rear.

Thanks, Rob

I think RC's problem is way beyond mere inflammation. I'd put my bet on severe diarrhea, or as cartoon kids have been known to say, 'dire rear', which tidily brings us back on topic. :D

I'd go with Scot's suggestion. It'd be cheaper to put a boneyard axle in. If you're short on time, use an exact replacement. If you have plenty of time, upgrade to a Dana-80 rear disc model; I think you can get one off a junked Ford SRW 1-ton.

In 2001 the Dana 80s had disk brakes if you can find one in a scrap yard it would have the parts you need to convert.

My mechanic still has not got around to finding the problem, said some time tommorrow. I will start calling around to junk yards to see what I can locate.

A ford rear would be interchangeable?

I recently repaired a tracloc differential in a F350 Dana 80 that had similar syptoms. After a serious pasture stuck incident, one of the spider gears siezed to the cross pin. A day later, it broke into pieces. He was lucky. I had to take everything apart for a thorough cleaning, but the only parts that I had to replace were the speed sensor, tone ring, and all the "guts" inside the tracloc. I was able to get a kit from Atlanta Gear and Axle for less than $200 that included the cross shaft, spider gears, side gears, thrust washers, and clutches. After I put it all back together, I let the guy drive it for a couple hundred miles and then changed the gear oil again. The cleaning was the worst part of the job... and tracking down the parts. Ford wanted nearly $800 for everything. Altanta gear and axle got me out the door for under $300 including a bottle of limited slip additive.

Good grief! How long does it take that mechanic to drop the cover?!!

Yea I know, his shop is out in the country and this snow really messed things up for him. He is well worth waiting for. His work is top notch and he is honest. For example he replaced my front axle seal for 90 bucks that included the part. I am also having him rotate and balance my tires, oil change, fuel filter change, brake job and a transmission flush while its in there.

If I do replace the whole rear is it possible to put a dana 70 or 80 out of a 3rd gen with disc brakes?

Thanks, Rob

Third Gen's use AAM axles, not Dana's. As others have mentioned, you could find a late model 2nd gen Dana rear with disc brakes to swap in.

I'd say fix what you've got...

Good news, it was the carrier berring. It was completly seized up, and the bushing was gone. He didn't think there was any damage to the driveshaft. The front left caliper was sticking alittle and the passenger rear drum brake had a leaky cylinder(fixed under napa warranty) and the springs were on backwards? So all and all pretty good news. This is probably where my forty mile per hour vibration has been comming from... Also he said it was good that he opened the rear the fluid needed replacement.

Thanks for all the help and replys, take care.

He said, if I remember correct, that the springs were reversed. When I pick up my truck I will get the full explanation and post it.
