I have a grinding that comes and goes. If I pull in 4wd it is not there. Is there a spring that holds the front axle diusenguaged. Any help would be appriciated.

Hey, how is it goin? Is the grinding sound coming from around the transmission/transfer case area? I know it's hard to diagnose but because the sounds down there can travel up and down both drivelines. Well I've had what you describe once, it was when the truck began to get torque out of the engine. It would grind like a unsycronized transmission tryin to grind into gear! Well my problem was in the transfer case it was a 50 cent snap ring that holds the main shaft out of engauging from 4 wheel drive. It would still go into 4 wheel but in two wheel it would grind. If that is what your experiencing pull the tailshaft of the transfer case remove the seal it is the first snap ring you come to. It will be broke, replace it and and the rear seal of the transfer they seem to go bad real quick too. Be Good!
I had the same thing happen but by the time I got it to someone who could figure it out I had some gears that were chewed up- expensive rebuild because of a broken little retainer ring.

CAn you explain your previous post more? I am having a hard time understanding what you wrote.
Sounds like the same problem I have. It started after I had a DTT torque converter installed.
My truck is also a 4x4.
I had the same problem. Sounded like the rear end gears were stripped. Wouldn't do it under light throttle at first. Got worse as time went on. Dealer said it was a $2. 00 part.
