Anyone that has installed the 3GSK end up with a "idle bouce". Especially with the engine is cold, each time I let the engine return to idle, RPMs will drop to idle and then a little bouce like it dropped a little lower and it quickly bouces back. Acts like it is boucing on a spring (GSK Spring ???)

This is on a 96 5sp. I keep my idle up around 850 - 900.

Not really a problem just a observation.

Idle was at the same RPM after the install so we did not adjust anything after GSK installed.

I am wondering it the idle is now controlled by the GSK (springs to tight) and it is boucing on the springs.

If someone had this happend and loosening the springs fixed it, I can easly make that adjustment. I would rather leave it alone if I have nothing to gain.

BTW... I must have a faulty 3,000 GSK kit. Mine does not cut back fuel until something over 3200. Have not tried it higher. WOW!

originally i had a diesel shop (which i will not name) install a 4k gov spring kit and ever since the idle was lower and it bounced at times along with the 3 second crank you read about. this year i found when i got the gutts to do my own work, they left out the baby springs which made it a 3k kit and diddnt adjust the two nuts to an even tension. i installed a piers 4k kit and set the nuts to an even feel of tension and the bounce was gone. what i mean by the tension feel is. .

i had the big nut cover off and pushed with my finger on the spring keeper and i could feel they had more tension on one than the the other. just a click!

who knows. . worked for me!

The tighter the springs are the higher the idle will increase.

I would click them back one click (1/4 turn) and raise the idle speed with the 10mm nut on the rear of the pump.

This will increase the available fuel in the idle setting and cure the problem. Assuming both gov springs are set the at the same tension, number of clicks or stud protrusion

3k gsk

Just installed a piers 3k gsk and wow it runs real hard now, it will fuel to 3400rpm no problem. :D :D :D Oo. Oo. Oo.

Thanks for the help!!!

That is what I wanted to here. Thought I would wait for others to confirm before I spilled some more oil.

The springs are set exactly based on revolution count and caliper measurements. I was going to attempt to lower the idle with the normal idle adjustment to see if GSK would allow it. I will just back off the springs a click and see what it does.

BTW..... If I leave the engine off for say 2 hours or more, will oil still run out when the plug is removed?

Thanks again.

JJW-ND,

I've noticed mine has a little bit of bounce when its cold and I start rolling in 2nd gear, sometimes even 1st. Have to give it just a bit of throttle to make it quit. Once its warm, its OK. It doesn't bounce just idling out of gear, either cold or warm.

I have the 3K GSK on my '98 12-valve.

JJW: I set my GSK with the protruding stud method, and when finished idle had increased about 100 RPMs. I've played with the idle adjustment on the back of the pump/linkage. The engine idles at lower RPM when first starting, and then increases when engine gets warmer, so I set it after engine temp was in operating range. I'm not sure why the idle speeds up after warmer temps are reached. It's easy to adjust it... . takes a 10mm wrench if I remember correctly.

I think there'll be oil escaping even after sitting awhile. Just pile some rags under it to absorb.

i noticed the iddle bounce also after the GSK install... what I find interesting is that cumminspower98's truck did it too (no mods at the time) mine is most noticeable cold.

Missed this posting. I just don't hit the boards much these days.

JJW;

You forgot to mention the #11 plate riding in the saddle over those springs. Not sure if that contributes to the idle bounce (surge) or just what is happening in the pump.

I can replicate a very slight surge on my auto by holding the go pedal more than idle when slowing for a turn. It will give a similar surge as JJW's truck, but not in idle. It must have a slight load from the trany and be slowing. I should go back in and re-adjust that one spring stack that is a ¼ turn tighter (came that way from factory) and see what happens.

I helped on another GSK set and plate install this past weekend also on an auto. No surge or idle bounce. GSK and a #4 plate and that baby reportedly goes. I never did get a ride Glen! Besides the GSK and plate, I really wanted to feel the Goerend TC in action.

I was thinking that I may have gotten the springs a ¼ or ½ turn light as the idle fell significantly. It was returned to factory setting, but reading Don's comments makes me think it was the better setting. The idle was bumped back up with the set screw. Raising the idle requires adding fuel. Either adjusting the screw or the springs must move the rack.

Glen's pump did not have any oil lingering in the spring area. I wonder if opening the aneroid housing helped drainback. Both mine and JJW's bled a few generous ounces. I still have my specialized injector pump oil pump out tool for the next time... .

GSK

I dont know if this is in relation to idle bounce but ever since I installed my GSK the rpm seems to hang at a certain rpm when I let off the gas say around 1200-1500 but returns to idle, It hangs for about 1-2 seconds, but it only does it every once in a while not all the time . Should I try tightning or loosening up the springs? The idle never changed when I put the kit in. 3000rpm kit

Mine had the idle bounce really bad when it was stock. After I put in the 4K kit the bounce was gone but had a lope/surge just off idle. Piers gave me a new set of spring seats that cured this as I had a very early version of the 4K kit. My point is, I think it has to do with spring tension as much or more than the spring kit itself because mine did it stock.

Still have not found a nice day to go back in a loosen the springs a click.

Those that thnk ND is cold all but a few days a year are correct this year. Lows in the mid 20s this morning. Last 6 weeks have average 15 - 20 degrees below normal. That has meant feezing temps many nights. Highs in the 40s maybe 50s. Snow somewere in the state almost every week with the latest I heard a few inches on the ground day before last. No mountains here in ND either. Highest elevation is about 3200. Did I mention wind!

Still fanless and running winterfront to keep warm.

Will report on what looseing the springs do when I get it done.
