Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Exhaust brake question

2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Fuel Sending Unit or Module?

Yesterday I had a big day of getting caught up on some work on my truck.

First I pulled the starter and replaced the contacts with the 24 volt ones from Larry's. The old ones were hardly worn at all though - figured I'd put the new ones in and save the old ones since it was off.

Then I replaced the fuel lines with the West Marine lines as recommended - what a job! Yes it is a bad job as everyone says, but well worth it. My old lines were all full of cracks. Hardest part was getting the old ones off - had to pull the starter, move the front driveshaft over and pull the master cylinder over to the side. Still very difficult. Putting the new lines on was much easier than getting the old ones off. I also checked the screen filter - it was clean.

I decided to pull the AFC cover off and look inside since I never looked at the plate before. Mine has a Bosch #2 3694 plate - anyone know how it corresponds to the other aftermarket plates? Anyway, it and the AFC cover were in the middle, so I moved them all the way forward. Did not change the star wheel.

Then I installed the 3000 rpm governor spring kit. Not a bad job. Went through the side and followed the directions. Had to lower my idle speed a little afterwards.

Results seem good with more low end power and faster acceleration. Rpms go right up. I've only driven it in the dark so can't see any smoke yet, but will see today.

Will I need to adjust the star wheel or can I move the AFC cover foward without adjusting it? Any suggestions please.

Thanks,

Blake

The star wheel only needs adjustment if you dont like the smoke trail. Did you check the follower after the GSK install, sometimes it needs adjustment and can make a difference on power. After my 4k set it was extremly gutless and the follower adjustment (thanks Cord and Jim) the truck was a lot faster than it had ever been and dynoed at least 50hp more than I thought it would with my mods.

Thanks Deezul 1,

The smoke is not bad at all. If I accelorate at a normal and even rate, there is littler perceivable smoke. If I really get on it, there's a brief black cloud of smoke. Not bad as I can control it at will depending on my foot. It does seem to accelerate more quickly and smoothly than before.

I presume the follower is the arm that rides up on the plate as the throttle is opened. If so, yes it seems to be fine. It starts at the bottom of the plate and moves up - just as in Piers' illustration.

Take care,

Blake

Blake;

How are you getting 300 hp from a Bosch (stock?) plate?

After installing the governor springs, have you noticed any stumble or flutter in the engine rpm when you let off the fuel pedal? Lowering the idle speed usually means you got the springs one click tight and a pronunced flutter in the 1500 rpm range.

I do not have my housing fully forward. It is only ¾ forward with the star wheel a few clicks forward as well. I get really good smoke and boost control that way. Moving the housing all the way forward can put you into situations of more fuel than boost (smoke) and more boost than fuel. Sounds odd doesn't it? AFC settings is more complex than simply slamming the housing forward and loosening the star wheel.

Mods? I have 3k GSK and #4 plate. My auto trany shift points when standing on the pedal are 2800 rpm and minimal (controlled) smoke. I love it.

JohnE,

It's not a stock plate. I'm not sure how it correlates to the TST plates, but it is definately a performance plate.

I haven't noticed any stumble, but I will pay closer attention to it tomorrow.

Thanks,

Blake

Would a stumble be noticed under load or no load? The only thing I notice is a very slight shake (perhaps stumble) at about 1100 rpm - not much of anything though. This is with no load. It may have been there before the GSK installation. Otherwise she seems to run really great and strong with no very little, if any, smoke, except under hard fast acceleration.

Still analyzing things as I go.

I notice the flutter under no and light load situations. I would call it more an annoyance than a problem. 1,100 rpm is the place I notice it. It can be a nuisance if it flutters in the driving rpm ranges.

I define light smoke as a haze. I get no puff of jet black smoke. If I romp on it, I will get a haze as boost builds. I have my AFC settings and plate position very conservative.

Ain't the GSK great? I really love having full fueling up to 3000 rpm.

Oh yes, I really like the higher rpms without falling on its face.

The slight flutter (or whatever - sometimes I think it's in my head as I'm trying too hard to find something wrong) does not seem to hurt anything. Almost imperceivable unless trying real hard.

It's hard to test the full performance of my truck without a big hill to go up. Otherwise it just goes too fast and I'll probably get a ticket:(
