Guess What I Saw Today

Thanks, TDR Staff

8-way power seat...

12V engine noise reduction efforts...

About half the high miles on my Ram are from going to Indiana. So with all the time I've spent on the roads up there, I can vouch for how aggressive their speed/vehicle enforcement is. Nowhere near as bad as Kentucky, though. I agree, it's not the cops, it's the adminstration, and a government run amok... . Maybe you guys in Texas can laugh it off, with your low enforcement. It's not funny to the rest of us.

But... twin turbos? Who was it that built such a monster for Smokey the Bear? Dave Mitchell, it better not have been you! :D Wasn't you either, was it, Dan Scheid? I really can't see any adminstration spending beaucoup bux of the taxpayer's money to get a toy like that. It's equivalent to them getting a Lingenfelter Corvette, or a Saleen Cobra. Must have been a drug bust or something. I'd be on the phone to the newspaper and my representative in a flash, complaining about my tax money going to such things.

I'm with you CobraJet, if the COPS did put something like that together, then either the tax payers would be in a big stink, or the truck would have been featured on every major automtive TV program  Also, you want American fast car chasers... ... buy a Viper or Vette and work it out

What Planet Is RobG From ?

All Departments have high speed chases. Turn on the TV sometimes. ! I agree the top speed is Bogus, but if it were mine I would brag too. Cops are human. Probably this is a Drug Forfeit Truck, and would be used on a drug Corridor and not for traffic. I know I'd have run the wheels off of it. :D :D :D

JoeG: We had two different 69 Dodges clocked at 168 mph in the Santa Maria Office. They would burn out so bad the Speedo would show 100 while not hardly moving. Equipment man could'nt keep tires on them. The air cleaner would suck seagulls off the sidewalk. It Roared.

SNEAKY SNEAKY

COBRAJET

Yes they do spend the time and $. Years ago Pennsylvania had a black f-150 351 supercharged with a banks or something, you could hear the whine before you could see it. You could order one from ford with same package..... almost. Buddy of mine bought one.

DRR-24V,

My neighbor (Jim Nobbs was his name) was stationed at Redding when he drove one on patrol. He claimed that one day on I5 a Porshe came by like a rocket and he got after it. The Dodge was supposed to have still been excellerating hard at 150 so he got a little scared and backed off. Caught the Porshe like it had stopped. I replied "Yeah, right".

JoeG-One Last Thought !

The cars were fast but everything else was awful. Jim used his head by backing off. Those tires would explode at high speed and look like a cut up golf ball. I lost one at 130 and never crashed. The bench seat had a big hole chewed in it. Brakes worked for one application only and then disappeared and the air conditioner would explode (at high speed) if you forgot to throw a switch manually. The Good Old Days?

You had to love those old Mopars- especially the "power  steering"! Fastest I ever got one to was 143mph- it had a 383 in it.

I used to own a ex-CHP '64 Plymouth Fury. Highway Patrol called it an interceptor. I only took it to 150 mph, but am sure it was good for much more. Got about 12 mpg on 17¢/gal Ethel. Anybody remember Ethel, seems like a long time ago.

Briar, I'm sorry that I offended you. I was not trying to be funny. With the very low traffic law enforcement around here, except for the occasional radar trap, I almost hate driving in town sometimes. People drive like they want to without hardly any fear of getting a ticket. Too much enforcement is not the answer, I know that. I'm sorry it is that way up there. But down here it's almost the exact opposite. Again, I apologize.

Bill,

I dunno, the best I ever saw in the '50s in LA was 19 cent regular. Except for gas wars that is. Once in a while a gas war would get it down to the low teens. None of these young guys even know was a gas war was.

HillCountryKid, you didn't offend me at all ! I'm sorry you took my words that way, I should have been more careful about how I phrased that. I guess a lot of us are just jealous a little , of the larger-than-life freedom and experiences that Texans seem to have. :D

I tend to get hot under the collar about over-zealous traffic enforcement , while criminals walk free...

I do see your point about people behaving irresponsibly when enforcement is very lacking. You are right to be concerned. But I'd rather have that, than more loss of freedom...

Dave, it was a 426. 17¢ gas was the norm during the 60s in the Calif central valley. During a gas war I saw it go down as low 11¢/ga. We didn't have red offroad diesel then but diesel delivered to the farm rarely went over 10¢/ga. Of course minimum wage was $1. 25, Coke was 10¢ with a 3¢ bottle deposit and a expensive new home was $20k. Then the Arab oil embargo hit in '72, the price went to over 50¢ in what seemed like overnight. No one thought the price could ever go over a buck...

400 Hp Olds

Any old-timers remember the Olds Delmont cop cars with 400 hp 455 olds engines?? I bought one with 38,000 miles on it , dropped it into a 79 buick regal, and turned 13. 0 1/4 mile. Disclaimer - Car only had a 2. 73 rear end and was not posi, ect. .

Always loved those Big Block Oldsmobiles... . Hence, the handle "Big Block"

Cobrajet,

I recall an ad about a Mercury sedan for law enforcement that would do 160 from FoMoCo. (so Ford claimedLOL)

I also recall reading Mopar ads about being careful with your Road Runner, we make cars for the Police also!

My moment of glory:

State Trooper," We were doing 120mph and you were walking away from us. "

Chevy 350, 4speed 1/2 ton 2wd, Lightly BOMBed. :D
