Guitar players????

How many TDR members are guitar players? I just bought a guitar last week(Alvarez Acoustic) and I am currently trying to learn how to play. One thing I cant believe is how much them dang strings hurt your fingers-esp the smallest string!!! How long did it take you all to learn how to play, any funny stories of your learning process?

I tried to teach myself how to play in high school and got frustrated and never really put much effort into it. My best friend and I were going to start a band, which was a joke! :-laf It never happened. I did know part's of song's, but since have forgotten. My older brother used to tell all his friend's I could play and would tell me to play for them when they came over... ... but I could'nt play. I just made stuff up and they thought it was just like a certain song . I was horrible! :-laf Take your time and practice. Your fingure's will callus and the string's won't hurt over time. I still have an acoustic that I "try" to play once in a while for fun. Good luck and have fun!

Yeah my buddy said that my fingers will callus eventually. I'm just practicing some chords now.

What ever you do, DO NOT give up yet. Your fingers are going to hurt for about a week if you pratice for about 15-30 minutes every day.



I play electric rythem, but not very well in my opinion. My friend/bandmate calls me the country version of Keith Richards the way I play rythem.



The best pratice you can do now is what my teacher called "muscle memory". Simply make the formation of the chord on the neck, and pull your fingers up just a hair (don't actully pull your fingers off the strings, just releave some pressure of pressing on the strings) and then push them back hard onto the neck. Do this for 30 second spans and at least 6 times during a "pratice session". Do this for the G, D, and C chords at first and you will be able to play a lot of songs. After those 3 chords, get the Em and Am and a capo and there will be a TON of songs you can play.

How did Jimi Do it? If he was left handed and used a right handed guitar it would upside down. So the traditional learning methods would not work? Would the strings be backwards too?

I've been piddling with it for 3 years, including taking lessons once a week for the last year, and I still wouldn't attempt to play anything in front of anybody. It really helps if you have a friend that plays, so he can show you stuff, too.

Hendrix restrung his guitars so they were correct for him (which would make them backwards/upside down for a right handed person).
