I grew dissatisfied with the 1/8 restriction in my Frantz original installation, due to too high a flow rate. It was OK in earlier times. when the generally stock engine was producing less soot, but that changed with the larger injectors, and further compromised with lots more short-haul driving here in our new eastern Oregon location.

I had hoped that our recent RV trip back down to the Stockton Ca. area would put enough miles on the oil thru a newly changed TP cartridge to significantly clear the oil - which at that point had about 7K miles on it. It DID make a difference, but not as significant as I had hoped - so when we got back, I changed over to a 1/16 orifice, and can already see an improvement in oil clarity. :D

Phil, I'm sure the setup you have planned with the GC combined with the Frantz will be a winner - especially if you can come up with a tight and solid cartridge for use in the GC...

Your fill method is how I do mine... I slightly overfill and leave it idle a few minutes... shut down, add more oil (usually overfill) and idle until it flows out of the return. I then top off with the required volume to make sure its filled (usually puts me at the top of the fill mark on the dipstick).

I'm going to be changing from Rotella to Schaeffers in the next couple weeks... hopefully I have gotten this GCF proven and can run some extended OCIs.

BTW, the gulf coast orifice is 5/64"... for what that's worth. I believe they stated 2-quarts/minute.

Gary, I noticed that with the flow down at 8oz the frantz worked "visibly" beautiful for about 3500 miles max. Then at about that point with this truck (but had the smaller injectors at that time), the filter was plugged enough (am assuming that was the cause) flow was almost stopped completely. At that time it required about a 20-30 degree turn of the needle valve to restore the previous flow rate. After replacing the element, was able to return the valve to its original setting to keep the same targeted flow. With that in mind, starting it off a little fast (like the one sixteenth orifice) might be perfect as flow may end up slowing down as the element becomes more restrictive. Just guessing. .

Thinking about adding a "few" extra wraps of paper to the paper towel element, but not enough to deform the element as Steve suggested. Might try to incorporate Garys method of adding the folded shop towels on the inserted end for that wedge effect. That did seem to help with the frantz.

Steve, without starting Oil-WW3 any particular reason you prefer the Schaeffers oil? I ended up with Amsoil syn this time and have been thinking Im going to stay with it for the next several 10k miles if filters permit.

Schaeffers has a local rep, and will deliver the product to my door... no shipping.

Been gone for a while, but got another CTD so we're back.

If anybody is still interested in the Gulf Coast Filters, and is looking for a source for the "hard wound" brown paper towels, do like I did... Google "hard wound paper towels" and buy the best deal. In my case it was not thru Epay or even a local supply house, but from a place in Houston. Cost +/- $28 for a case of 12. Or you could buy single a roll from a local restaurant/garage that uses these.

Reinstalled the GCF on my new '95.
