After spending some time in the 2nd gen forums, it sounds like lots of guys are removing the stock airbox and going with an open air filter, either a K&N RE-0880 cone type of thing, or a huge paper element filter.

After thinking about it, would it be possible on our first gens to one step further and eliminate the black rubber intake hose that runs from the turbo to the stock airbox, and just hang an air filter off the turbo?

I imagine the turbo sound would be much more evident--obviously some would like this and others wouldn't. Would there be any functional drawbacks, like maybe too much heat from the turbo, etc?

I believe the 2nd Gen's do it because of the stock box being restrictive and a lot of bends. The 1st Gen's have a cool air source that I would believe outweigh the benefits of more direct, hotter air. There has been discussion about this in the past and you may have luck with a search.

I've actually done quite a few searches on it, and there isn't any clear indication that a relatively smaller amount of cool air is better than a relatively larger amount of warmer air (at least from what I could see from the search results).

However, there DO seem to be more posts indicating at least an EGT drop when running an open air filter. Some also indicate a tiny bit more power, others a tiny bit better milage. It sounds as if the lower intake restriction of the open filter compensates for any degradation as a result of higher intake air temperatures.

I would highly suspect that those trucks seeing a benefit with an open air filter are equipped with intercoolers. Without an intercooler you might not see any significant improvement, or maybe just a smaller improvement than those of us with intercoolers. That's just a guess of course.

Hey guys!

My personal Doh  here, but I drilled holes in my air boxes to increase flow and pull air from the headlight hole. The fact is that this set-up works real well in cooler temps because the holes I drilled really do pull the cool air through the headlight hole COOL

But, in warm temps like every one has been having lately, it does raise EGT's enough that I am trying to find out how to build a fresh air intake/air box for our trucks. It can be done, I just need a parts cataloge from donaldson or nelson and some more $$ :D

How warm does the outside air temp have to get before you notice a rise in EGT?

About the hottest it ever gets here in Anchorage is maybe 70 degrees F.

Midnite:

If you do a search of "air-box" topics in the first gen realm here, you'll find i've come up with a "open-air" setup for the first gen. . i have pictures of what mine looks like... . if your'e interested in it, lemme know via e-mail... "cummnzpowr@aol.com" it has worked wonders with mine... noticed a significant drop in EGT's and turbo is really sweeeeet sounding in the cab... thanks Greg:D

Midnite,

If 70 is all you get then it probably won't make a bit of difference. The past few days here make me want to live up there :( Temp 95-100 with heat index of 110 yeehaw!
