I just went through something similar. Mine started like that but eventually got worse over about 3 months got to the point where it wouldn't start at all. They first replaced the pop off valve on the rail. The pop off valve pops off at 26,000 psi to prevent any damage. Thinking this was stuck open and would not allow pressure to build on rail. That didn't fix it. Next they replaced all 6 injector tubes. This didn't fix. Finally came to the conclusion that # 2 injector was bad and possibly #3. Star told dealer to replace all 6 injectors and this cured the problem. Not a bad deal got all new injectors at 93,000 miles and valves adjusted at the same time. To find if you have a bad injector plug off fuel line to each injector one at a time, Once you have the bad injector plugged it will start.

CAREFUL! There's a lot of pressure in those lines.

I have a follow up appointment for the harder starting tomorrow afternoon, & I have all of the information that Ryan sent about lift pump flow, & hard starting. My question is, would a decline in MPG indicate a lift pump problem? If not what would it indicate? My driving habits remain the same conservative.

Thanks Again

If it limits power, requiring you to stay in any given gear at higher rpm for a longer amount of time to accelorate, then yes, it would hurt mileage. The slow starts are an indication of a weak pump (just to confirm) It should start relatively easy within a few minutes of shutdown and then have a hard start about an hour later. If It's really bad it will take less time for the pressure to leak down, causing a hard start.

Thats not always the case, mine would restart after shut down pretty good, but from about 30 minutes upto 4 or 5 hours it would not hardly start at all. I to thought lift pump, and it very well could be, but it could be that you have a bad injector also.
