Winter Beater Problem

Why do they feel it necessary to rap the throttle like 5 million times while sitting next to you at stoplights?Do they just think they are bad-*****es and want to **** people off? Or are they cleaning out their cylinders? Jeez. . that is so annoying

lol

Letting who know they are there?i couldn't hear you lol :-laf ... i bet they would get ticked off if we rapped our throttles and smoke poured out on their pretty imitation leather jackets  ... loud pipes may save lives, but smokey pipes can be seen AND heard. . Oo.

Monkey see monkey do for me :-laf

Not so long ago, before every bike had an e-starter, when shovels and pans had carbs like a linkert,S&S B,SU,bendix, the bike would be at idle and just "poof" and die which then you would kick out the sidestand and try to get it to relight and by then you are holding up traffic so it was common to keep your bike revved up a little, maybe these youngsters are just rapping off thier straight pipes being kids, who knows, I wouldn't soot nobody over it, better a hog w/drag pipes than loud, vulgar rap anyday in my book, I imagine uptight 4wheelers can still get a forget-me-knot at the next light.

I don`t......

do it when I ride my FLHS,but then again I haven`t modified my truck to smoke on purpose either. I changed my mufflers to the Vance & Hines Touring to get the tone & modest volume that I desired. Sound is subjective. I like a low, gutteral throb; almost a bass type of tone. A loud crack is not fun to hear all day long. Most of the really nasty pipes I hear are from the new, profiler owners- i. e. yuppies. I am not a big fan of yuppy owners. They "buy" into every sport they "discover". When someone tells me they "are into" anything, I figure they are an idiot, And I ignore them. But I have to ask you if you enjoy listening to the sport bikes ? They are fast but they sound like chainsaws. I have owned 3 Harleys all told. They are getting quieter mufflers each time I trade up. DK.

At idle the oil pressure and alternater fall to low levels. One reason is to raise oil circulation and increase voltage output to not not have an off line stumble or stall. I've incountered a few stumbles and stalls which made things a little 'interesting'. HD has made improvements but it still happens on my 04 ultra classic when cold.

Again... there are those that like to hear the brap brap. Just like there are car drivers with 1000 watt subwoofers shaking the windows on neoghborhood homes. And muscle cars that can't keep thier tires planted. Diesel owners who like to bellow smoke. Paper or plastic? On and on the list can go.

This problem is easily solved by increasing idle speed to proper levels. Everybody wants them idling SO SLOW because they like the sound and then cry because their bike dies.

with its roller bearing bottom end it always amazed me how little oil press they have @ idle or wot. I do know from exp. that when I was in stop and go traffic with the clutch pushed in and would reach down to knock it in gear @ idle it was a good time to spit and die, maybe from a hot dragging clutch combined w/points and a S&S B not exactly state of the art components! and Im building one just like it again. I'll have my cryin towel ready.

There is an old saying that fits here for you...

"For those who have to ask why,no explanation is given,BUT,For those who know and understand why,no explanation is needed".

Why do they feel it neccesary to drive those huge loud rattling diesel trucks? It is so annoying when I am sitting next to one at a stoplight trying rap the throttle on my Harley... :p

Harley owners are deaf..... so are the truckers... .

There... now I've irritated you all. good night now. :-laf :-laf :-laf :-laf

*turns off hearing aids and goes to bed*

:D

on a serious note... . Im not a Harley fan myself because of all the yuppies with the CRACKhouse exhausts..... hard on the ears even with the dam aids turned off and its all noise and no go. When its time for me to own a bike, it will be Goldwing. I like my comforts and I like to listen to the stereo instead of the bike on a long trip.

As for the trucks... thats a different story. But Im also an anti-smoke guy too. :p smoke is wasted power. Im moe impressed when somebody blows by with tonnage and all there is to see is a light to no haze.

You might want to give the ULTRA CLASSIC a fair try-out. I looked hard at the Goldwing and Ultra. The cost is comparable for both. The comfort is great on both. The Goldwing feels top heavy but having a reverse is a plus. What decided it for me, was the ease of doing my own maintenance schedule work instead of paying the shop $65-$80 per hour less parts. The Harley won out. I purchased a shop manual for $55 and 32K miles later its only been to the shop to have new tires mounted to the rims that I've removed and brought in. Hands down it's an easy bike to work on.

I don't have loud pipes and easily hear the stereo at 80 mph. I have Gerbings heated gear and ride all winter except when there's ice. I average around 500-600 miles a week and it hasn't missed a lick (still bone stock). I've owned Honda's, Yamaha's and Kawasaki's. This is my first 'HOG' and honestly I wonder why I never had one sooner. Oh yea... now I remember... it was the price :-laf they can seem a bit high.

The only problem with is HD has to be EPA compliant, both emission-wise & sound-wise. Stock HD's do that. My '04 Ultra Classic might stumble a bit at the lights, that's why I tap the gas. Besides, I like the sound of my bike.

EMD DP, price a G/W & a HD Ultra. The $$ isn't much different when new. Wait a few yrs. and see the difference. The HD is a much better investment.

As for those who like loud pipes & run them open, watch what is happening across the country. Daytona started to crack down on loud pipes. Others are going to follow suit, Laconia, NH is working on some new laws about this. Decide if you want Big Brother to mandate these changes or do want to do it yourself... just my opinion...

I install the extra loud horn kit on my HD's. It works! :D

I enjoy the sound of HD's. I do not own one but maybe someday. I live north of Milwaukee and when they had the big reunion there I could hear the bikes running north & south on I43. Fell asleep many nites to to rumble on the Interstate. Thanks HD riders :D

That`s the truth!

I bought my 93 FLHS in 02 with 34k on it for 10G. My old roommate just bought a mint, loaded to the gills 98 Wing for 6G. And it only has 25k on it. That`s 2 years newer, 9k less miles, and it brought 4G less. And I think it sold for more new than my bike did. Wing resale is terrible, the bikes deserve better. DK.

All interesting info... . Something I will have to get in depth more when Im closer to buying... (couple years yet). The guys at work are pretty much a 80 (HD)/20 (Wing) split. Funny part is that both camps respect each other... . lots of ribbing of course... but its not like some bike/car/truck wars that I've seen in other workplaces. . :-laf :-laf Both groups are pretty serious riders too.....

Don't worry Cummnzpowr the legislation is coming down the pipes as we speak. Entire cities have started putting bans and restrictions on motorcycles and these guys are to thank for it. the off road bikes are getting hit with restrictions too, so you wont have to listen to those ear splitting four strokes from miles away anymore either.

I just roll my window up on the side they are on when they roll up to me at a light and look down my nose at them making it obvious why i'm doing it.

I'm a member of the AMA and ABATE of IL. I ride, I vote. I am on top of most of the political battles and proposals currently in my state and others. I have written to congressman and actively speak out to protect the rights of motorcyclists in general. your home state of california is a hot bed for most of this activity. the Forest Service, BLM, EPA, Riverside County and many others are up in arms and trying to take away the rights to use the lands and ride the roadways.

Most actions I appose. I'm apposed to helmet laws for adult operators/passengers but the one thing i cant stand is just what you described. I cannot stand loud exhaust that shakes your teeth or frightens a sleeping unsuspecting child when it roars by. when your actions affect other's that's where the line is drawn in the sand for me.

I live 2 miles from town as a crow flys and can sit at night from inside my home and here the bikers leaving the local taverns in town ripping down the highway. If i drove a car around like that i'd make it exactly ten feet before being ticketed.
