I took a trip to Billings, in my 99. When I was there, I went to Rocky Mountain Cummins, and had some work done to it. Anyway, When the Mech opened the hood, he pointed to my air filter indicator. IT WAS PEGGED:eek: . It was a brand new filter, when I left home. And, I took my 04 on a trip, not so long ago, and had the same thing happen to it.

Both times I encountered the same kind of road conditions. There was a fine drifting of snow blowing across the road. I am fairly certain that the intake structure, the way it is designed to get air from the inside of the front fender, has a tendency to draw this fine snow in with the air, and plug the filter.

Am I correct in assuming this? Has anyone else had this phenomenon?

When I took the filter out, both times, there was nothing there to indicate a bad, or plugged filter.

I don`t know about a 99 or 04 but on a 97 there`s a plastic snout sticking out of the air filter box in to the fender it`s soft enough that it will collapse and slow the air flow down enough to pull the filter minder down when you have your foot in the go pedal.

I have a buddy with an 04 and he has pegged the filter minder on a bone stock truck in the summer. Filter was clean. Who knows why, I would guess the filter does not flow enough. I don't know if he has done anything about it yet. . but I reccomemed the scotty 2 system. I know DD has a set up as well as others.

There are some 3rd gen trucks that had filter minders with springs that were too weak and showed bad filters when they weren't. I think there is a TSB for it. BTW, you posted in the 2nd gen forum. You'd get better response in the 3rd gen forum with an '04.

correct forum ?

mberry, Actually it has happened to both of them. The 99 and also the 04:(

Also something that most do not want to hear on this site, is that my 1984 Ford diesel, would plug up the air filter when I would buck snow. that is when I left the intake hose hooked up to the air filter. It would suck up so much snow from the inside of the front fender that it would almost kill the eng. from lack of air. After a couple of times like that, I just removed the hose and never had that problem again.

happened to my wifes '03 yesterday

took out the original ... put the new mopar filter in drove home ... filterminder read dirty ... pushed the button ... drove it to work today got home ... pegged again ... brand new filter no contaminates at all ... that's why i've got a post about it in the third gens ... filter minder is junk!

I have to say the filter does not flow enough air. This can be prooved as I did. I purchased a AST intake/filter system because my filter minder was always pegged. Start pulling a hill... listen to the turbo start to wine, stop at the top of the hill and check the minder. PEGGED!!

NOW... same hill, same filter minder but the AST system. Filter minder is fine.

Im not saying that there is not a broken minder here or there but generally they simply do not work, ie showing filter is clean when it has been in for 100,000miles.

Mine did that too after I installed the tst fuel plate with the boost elbow that came with the kit. I also installed 215 injectors about the same time. Some one else posted having the same problem and used a 1 inch hole saw and cut several holes in the bottome of the stock air filter housing. End of problem. Worked for me. :D

I believe that is the fix that I am going to try.

The filter plugging happened only once or twice in 100,000 miles of driving. the driving habits were not altered, but road conditions were the same each time,(fine snow drifting). otherwise the filter minders do not read plugged any other time.

so therefore, I think that if I drill holes in the box so that it can get more air from under the hood. :)
