Has anyone ever dyno'd before and after switching to synthetic oil?

Sure hope this doesn't start another war.

Has anyone ever dyno'd their truck before and after switching to synthetic oil (with no other mods) to determine if there is any HP gain from the synthetics?

I've run brand "A" synthetic and Mobil 1 in my gassers for many years and firmly believe that they ran better after switching to synthetic oil.

I'm kind of wondering if there is any numeric proof on this on the Cummins.

Note: This post has nothing to do with extended drain intervals, soot, bypass oil filters, or API certification.

No, but I dy now every time synthetic is mentioned.

I would think that your dyno numbers will be lower due to the syn oil leaking all over the dyno rollers causing slippage;)

Not Dyno'd but...

When I worked at a auto repair shop, we converted a lot of cars and light trucks over to Mobil 1. In every case the owners reported between 5-10% increased fuel milage.

So I guess one could say that less fuel was being used to overcome internal engine friction, and therfore the engine would be able to supply more power to the flywheel or rear wheels.

One issue that came up was with carburated engines was the cold start fast idle setting. The fast idle setting is intended to overcome internal engine friction caused by the closer clearances and thicker oil when the engine is cold. Well with the synthetic oil, there was so much less cold-running friction that we had to turn down the fast idle setting to keep the engines from revving way to high.

My experiences with synthetic! Greg L

I dyno'ed the switch from factory differential lube to Torco 75-140 synthetic, +2 hp at 240 hp level, +10 at 350, +12 at 380 hp level. More recently I dynoed the change from torco to LE607, a premium dino 90 wt. It was about 1 hp lower than the Torco, but it wasn't warmed up near as much as the Torco, so I feel that at equal temperatures the LE is as good or possibly a bit better for hp. The Torco was about 130-140 degrees and the LE was about 50-70 degrees cooler, I estimate.

I know that isn't engine oil, nor does it cover all brands, but it is what I have done and here are the results for free. I also dyno'ed five NV4500 lubes and reported the results a couple issues ago in TDR.

I haven't tried premium/synthetic engine oils since I change it every 3000 miles to get the soot out of there. I don't think synthetics would be cost effective for my situation.

The local serious drag racers, claim nothing can free up power like Royal Purple on the dyno.

But I have not heard anything with Diesel.

Joe, the 4500's are"synthetic" from the get go.
