I'm washing my truck. Just having a ball with the pressure washer and then it dawned on me, What the hell am I doing! What if that rubber seal around the fuel filler door leaks and water enters the fuel filler (and tank)? (or a driving rain from the side for that matter?)

So, for me, it's obvious, I need something to protect against water (and dirt) from getting into the tank.

Here's my question; It appears the Geno plug seals with o-rings and there's no vent for air to displace the fuel volumn as it's being used. Is this a problem, could it be a problem. One could simply drill a small hole in the cap but I'd prefer to leave it as designed. What do you think? Does the tank need to be able to pull air into it to keep from either collapsing the tank or causing engine problem? Your thoughts appreciated.

CAPLESS FUEL FILLER DUST CAP ('13-'14)

I've got the rubber/wing nut one that Geno's sells and have been using it for 13,000km's so far and no problems with it being completely sealed up. I do believe there is a little 1/4" or so line that comes up just under the filler neck out of site that is a vent as well which would deal with this issue.

I just installed the billet cap you referenced from Geno's on my truck, but prior to that I used a tight fitting plastic plug. I've never noticed a vacuum or pressure buildup.

I didn't see the rubber wing nut one. I'll go back and look for that. thanks.

It's hard to believe that Ram is selling trucks without a fuel cap. How cheap is that?

I've seen Joe Donnelly's 2013 Truck. He solved the issue with a PVC cap.

Are GM, Ford and Toyota going Capless also?

I just bought a $2.00 Rubber pipe cap. Fits over the fitting perfectly with just some minor trimming to shorten its height. Also, it fits around the outer perimeter of the fueling inlet, so almost no chance of dirt or water settling over the opening.

Yea, what were they thinking. If the seal on the door leaks, water will enter the fuel spout. (no more high pressure car washes). And then when you bring it to the dealer with water in the tank, they'll tell you, sorry, you got some bad fuel.

Hi guys. Look I might buy a cheap cap myself when my truck lands, just for the psychological comfort, but as I understand it it's not just(as I gather it appears) a gaping hole opening straight into the fuel tank. There are diverter flaps on the way down to deflect dust, water, etc, which I believe is why they can be finnicky to fill, so we're not actually relying on the filler flap seal. Is this right?

Correct......the 2nd flapper has to be activated before anything enters the fuel tank. I have around 42k miles on my '13 and have had ZERO issues with fuel contamination or DEF contamination.
It's not like

Has anyone considered or actually replaced the factory fuel filler with one from an older truck that takes a cap? I have 14 coming in a few weeks and am considering taking one from a 10-12 and swapping them out

There's not enough room for a diesel fill w/cap and DEF to cohabitate behind the fuel door. Instead of having an unsightly large fuel door like the F-Series, I imagine RAM opted to keep the same opening and thus went capless.

In the several posts I have seen on this subject one thing never mentioned is my greater concern. That is the irate neighbor, punk high school kids or just deviants in general that might resent you or your truck and pour sugar, sand or whatever into your tank without your knowledge. I live in Taxifornia where this is more likely to happen but the point is, why go capless and risk it? I am hoping for a locking cap option after market and until then, when in L.A., I will sleep with one eye open. At home, the dogs take care of the capless problem for me. I may have to go with a locking fuel door if that option from Genos works. Probably would paint it with body color though.

Somehow a second flapper is going to divert dirt and water from getting into the tank? Say what? Geno's and others (home depot!) have figured out how to put a cap on the filler, you'd think Ram's engineers could have. ($$!) Their even selling them on Ebay for God's sake! Probably made in China Ha. Personally, I'd rather a bigger door than no cap. ($$!) But I'm funny like that.
