Hi There, sorry this is kind of a duplicate post.

My wife just bought me the Mopar fog light kit for Christmas. I installed the lights and was waiting on wiring them to try and figure out a couple of things.

First question is: behind the drivers side bumper there is a wiring harness and plug that is not being used. Is this the factory wiring and my truck just came without fog lights? If it is can I buy a factory switch and shorter wiring harness that will plug into that and not run any wires into my cab? There is no plug on the passengers side. I assume that if I could get a wiring harness that would plug into that empty harness it would come with a leg that ran to the passenger side. My dodge dealership usually is not very helpful when I call them.

Next question is: If I have to use the switch, wiring harness, and relay that came with my kit can I splice into the Running light feed instead of the low beam feed it tells me to splice into and the lights would then work with the High and Low beams. I remember doing something like that on the aftermarket lights I put on my Toyota.

Next question: If I use what came with the kit can I buy another little toggle switch like what came with this kit so I can put in two switches. One for my fog lights and one for my auxilary backup lights.

Thank you in advance for all the help

Thanks,

Joe

I'll answer what I know. All SLT's come wired for fogs, as mine did. That one connection, at your bumper, will plug into a harness you don't get with the kit. This splits to both lights. The next thing you do is replace the headlight switch. The whole process takes 10 minutes with the correct parts with no holes and no splicing. I went through the drilling and splicing on a 1500 that I had, at first I just connected the relay to the battery then later I searched and found a low beam wire. I wont do any of that again. I prefer the factory operation and look.

If I understand correctly. You purchased a harness that went from the plug on the drivers side behind the bumper to the drivers side fog light and then ran also across to the passenger side fog light. You also purchased a factory fog light switch that turns to turn the headlights on and off and pulls out to turn on the fog lights. Is this all correct? Was there anything else or is it really that simple? I would like to keep the install as clean as possible, if I didn't have to run any more wires I would be real happy. Do you remember about how much the parts cost.

Thanks, Joe

Looks like on Dodgeparts.com it will cost me about $70 to get the harness and the switch. Probably the way to go it will be a cleaner install. Hate to spend that much more. What are your opinions? Did it work out to be real simple?

Will probably order in the morning.

Thanks, Joe

I have a question for those of you with factory fog lights, or at least the switch. Can you have the fog lights on without the headlights being on too?

My 97 Intrepid won't allow fogs w/o headlights. I know it's rare, but sometimes its needed.

I had an incident last month up in Montana in a rented Yukon. Driving at night on a two-lane road with patches of snow, I met two 18-wheelers. Their draft put up a horrendous cloud of snow and the glare of the headlights on that cloud had me totally blinded. I turned off the headlights and the fogs let me see just enough to keep it on the road until the cloud was gone. I left quite a crease in the seat!

BTW, the stock headlights on my truck are WAY better than that Yukon!

Thanks. That's good to know.

My '97 Intrepid won't allow it. I'm sure it's possible electrcially... it's the switch itself that stops it from happening.

With the headlights on, I pull the knob out to turn on the fogs. If I turn the knob back to turn off the headlights, it also "cams" in, turning off the fog lights. :(

Thank you all for your responses. I ordered the part from the dodge dealer up in Seattle and received the parts last week. I will install the switch and harness this week. Our new daughter came a week early so we are adjusting to newborn life again. Once I get a few minutes I will finish installing.

Well, I "accidentally" installed my fog lights today.

Two weeks ago, I found a guy on eBay that was selling some OEM take-off lights, complete with the harness. Last week, I got the new headlight switch from the dealer. Been out of town all week and the lights got here while I was gone.

Late this morning, I was fiddling around the truck while I waited for the wife & grandkids to come out so we could go to Sam's Club. I was looking at how the headlight switch bezel fits in. As I "gently" pulled at top of the lower steering column cover, it popped loose in my hand & scared the crap out of me.

Well, OK. If that came loose so easily, I wondered if I could do the same with the switch bezel. Sure enough, my fingers were the only tools I needed to pull it loose. I used the ignition key to depress the locking tab on the connector and the whole thing was out.

Three philips screws later, the new switch was in the bezel and I was putting it back together. When I pulled the switch out, the little green indicator lit up. Cool!

Put the whole thing back together and still had to go find out what was holding up the "crew".

After our outing, I took another 30 minutes and installed the fog lights. Heck, this was easier than changing the oil and that's pretty darned easy!

If anyone has doubts about doing this... GO FOR IT!
