When I did my sport headlight and HID conversion, I rewired the entire headlight system. I used 2 relays and all 16 gauge wiring. Turned out great, much better over stock.

Geno's has the Brite Box setup in there catalog, which lets your headlights be on hi and low beam at the same time with no extra load on headlight switch.

Is there a HID headlight replacement available for a 97 model ?

That lighting is like listening to a better stereo ,once you have experienced it , it's too late . Been on the net looking, all

to no avail. Thanks RJ

headlight rewire

rj2:

i just finished rewiring my 01. 5 sport. i don't know of any kit, but did my own using two relays. i fed the lights with 12 ga wire, and grounded the lights with 10 ga wire. with Wagner "bright light " bulbs, makes a big difference. not sure i could have afforded a hid conversion. if you want details of the rewire, pm me, and i'll send it to you. not hard to do, but the changes would take too much space to post. btw, just finished rewiraing the taillights and added some real backup lights. :D :D

Where are you guys mounting your relays. Are you wiring from the bulb sockets to the relay and attaching the old socket wires to two relay command terminals? What is the color code for the 97's.

i didn't get too fancy with my setup so far, but i'm not finished yet. i have the sport, so i'm not going to add the second filament of the low beams(9007) to high beams. i think that dodge changed to switched ground in 2000, so your truck probably still has switched 12v+ to your head lights. in that case, you would use the switched 12+ from the wire to the socket currently to attach to the switched lug on the relay. use 8 or 10 gauge wire to obtain FUSED power from the battery, run 10 or 12 ga wire to the wire you cut at the headlight, and a new ground for the headlamp socket--8 or10ga, and you're done. i just put the relays in the space beside the power distribution center. taped around the connections to prevent a short. i don't know the color code for your lights, but if you have a test light or voltmeter--pull the socket, turn the lights on and check the wires both on low and high beams, to find which wire is which. any other questions, pm me, and i'll help you figure it out.

I retrofitted Sport headlamps to my 97, and used the spare low beam filament in the inner lamps (9004) for DRL's. They are very visible because of the design of the Sport lamp housing that scatters light sideways. Very handy at intersections. I added a DRL relay that is driven from the start/run wiring.

I added a relay that senses if either highs or lows are on and disables the DRL's.

There is yet another relay that drives the 9004 high filaments.

The outer 9007 filaments are driven from the stock wiring. You have to swap two pins in the headlamp socket to make this work.

16ga wire is fine for headlamp wiring using 65W lamps. .

BTW Dodge used 20ga ground wires on my 97 headlamps so they have to be upgraded this week.

dtrl

i may work on mine tonite. i have an aftermarket dtrl module from jcwhitney which will illuminate the "low beams" at bout 1/2 voltage. rather than fire it up with the on ("ignition") switch, i'm going to put a pressure switch in the top of the oil filter in the spare port, to trigger the module. that way, the lights won't light during prestart warmup. the switch i bought closes at 7-10 psi, so should work nicely. may not do it tonite, but i'm going to put a kill switch between the 12v+ supply and the supply leg of the switch, so i can have the lights off during engine work, etc.

btw, i'm convinced that rewiring my headlights with 12 ga wire for supply, and grounding with 10ga (1 ground wire to each socket on my sport) gave me significantly more light down the road. wagner bright light bulbs helped a bit more.

i now have my fogs wired independently, so i can have them on with high beam, also, which helped some more. :)

Sport Headlights

I have the lights and marker lights sitting in the floor is there a Brite Box avalible for me to intstall the sport headlights that I have.

I do not have a sport so I am concerned about whether I can run the two bulbs or will it just run one?

I also would like to know if there is a part # of the Brite Box that will work if it is possible.

I have had the lights in the froor for a little too long, I have been playing around for HP and not for looks.

I have come to the conclusion that looks are in need due to someone in the area has just brought one into town that is just like mine even the tires and wheels.

SO I plan on doing the Sport Headlights and a Bright Yellow sprayed in bedliner with a modified Racerback from lund with a Trailblazer lighbar or 5 KC Daylighters.

Sorry for the long post just wanting to give an outlook to those that know where I am coming from. I hope you all can help Because you guys/gals have helped a tremendous amount to me and my goals THANK YOU ALL

sb:

there is a brite box for the sport--geno's # 0509, "sport 99 up". why don't you just rewire it your self, with heavier wire, and relays. it ain't no big deal..... pm me if you want me to work out the details and send 'em to you. there are options to use.

:)

redneckdr,

I would like to do it for m7yself but I am in recovery for a broken back at L5/S1 vertebreas and they put rods that are attached to my hips and just doing the injectors with my back was a challege. Let alone rewiring the light system.

If it would be no problem would you work out the diagrams for the 2001. 5 switched neg. system and email it to me I will sit down and see if I could do it with some help. I don't trust many people around here with that sort of stuff. Never had to rely on anyone before.

RJ2,

Yes, there is HID (High Intensity Discharge) conversion available, but you WILL need to replace your headlights with the 99+ Sport version. HID is not cheap either. Count on spending around $600 for the HID hardware. I built all my own wiring harnesses for everything, no "brite-boxes" needed. Just 10 bucks worth of wire and relays. Very simple. I have wiring diagrams for Sport lighting conversions if anyone is interested. -- email address removed --

The benefit to HID is more light, while using less wattage to do it. Typical halogen lights are rated at 1000 lumens for a 45/55W standard bulb. HID is 3200 lumens at a mere 35 watts. Runs cooler, and produces over three times the light. HID uses very high voltage (23kV) to start the bulbs, and then the voltage is regulated between 75-80V during regular illumination. The gas in the bulbs is metal halide, which is the same type of purplish-white lighting used at baseball parks, etc. Very efficent, very powerful lighting. Email me for more info. :D Lighting on the Ram is one of my specialties.

Here's the HID. Notice the difference between the HID and the foglights. It will make any "super-white" type of bulb look dim.

rj2:

the sport headlights are the quad headlights fitted as OEM on the "Sport Appearance Group". you've probably seen them--the trucks with color matched bumpers and "clear" headlight lenses.

lights

forgot to add to the above post--got my daytime running lights working last nite. kinda neat. wired with a pressure switch in the top of the oil filter. lights don't come on 'til oil pressure comes up, then go out after engine kill, and pressure drops. :D
