2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Headlightconversion

I'm working on a complete headlight conversion for my 01.

Photos of the prototype are in my readers rig gallery.

I removed Everything, plastic housing, turn signal, wiring harness,etc. !!

I used Hella projector, DOT approved, high and low beam modules. Each uses the new H9 bulbs and the beam patterns are outstanding!!

I fabbed the new housing from aluminum and steel strap, the lens from the new abrasion resist lexan. The lens is held on by 10-24 rivnuts, so it is easy to remove for cleaning and adjusting the modules. They are individually adjustable weather proof.

These are halogen, not HID. HID modules are available for approx 5x the cost of the halogen, and the HID are not DOT in this case.

The initial impression is that these are a HUGE improvement over the factory lights, even though I had already rewired each filament in the factory lights with its own relay and 10 gauge wire.

The DC lights have to be the worst, but from the pics of the front of your truck you have that taken care of that, looks like you could compete with the sun :-laf

very nice! i like the look of those. they have that look like there from a future movie but not in a bad way i think they rock. do the hid's put out a lot of heat?

They do have a little of the Mad Max look to them!!!

The final version will be refined a bit and powder coated to match the other accessories,(silver-vein).

We are going into town next week and will be Finally getting a decent dig. camera!!

I've gotten quite a few email requests for info and prices. I will try and answer some here.

The Hella modules are approx 85 each with the mounting plates and connectors(x4).

There is fabrication involved, and a few specialized tools.

The HID modules are over 500 each. The HID don't produce much heat and tend to ice up without the headlamp nozzles that are built into the vehicles equiped with them. My wifes Touareg has Bixenon (HID) and it tends to ice up quickly in certain conditions IF you don't keep ahead of it with the washers!!

With the great beam patterns of the Hella modules, I don't think a person would gain much effectiveness with the HID over the halogen. I know that is hard to believe, but that is my feeling so far.

There is a chance that I might gear up and put these together for sale.

Not to get off the headlights but was there alot of work in the air ride seats? I see youve got the ext cab... would they still work on a standard cab? or would there be issues of the seats hitting the back of the cab.

We got a 5. 1 mp Sony camera today. Now to figure out how to use it!!

The air ride seats would be a lot easier to adapt to a regular cab, as you don't have to worry about the shoulder harness mounting. I had to fabricate a pretty involved mounting system under the headliner!!

You will have to make some custom mounting brackets, but that is fairly simple.

I ordered some equipment today and I'm planning on producing the headlights.

(2nd gen first, then 3rd. )

I've got most of everything I need to make a couple of sets.

I even found some adapters ( male plug to attach to the 9004 and 9007) so I can basically sell them as "plug and play".

I'm planning on including harnesses that will have each light module on its own relay that is switched by the factory wiring, so the light gauge junk won't be carrying much of the load. Also I plan to have all four modules(high and low beam on each side) light on high beam. I'm setting up for a variety of colors of powder coat, so I can match the trucks.

Also I have a bunch of modules on order.

Here is the conversion i did over the weekend on my dad's 96 12v truck. They fit perfect, brand new Depo lights, it was approx 180 for the set from Importvision.com talk to Ken... . I used the brite box conversion that takes load off the factory switch and adds the brite box feature. Well worth the money IMO

As far as I know... I don't see how you'd be stepping on anyone's toes. If anything... I'd look into a patent of some sort. Before you know it... someone will buy a set... reverse engineer it and have all the labor done in China.
