I have not shot the S&W 1911 but I got to handle one recently and it seems like the best 1911 for the money right now IMO.
Kimber is currently having some quality issues with their MIM(Metal Injection Molded) parts but their slide, frame, barrel fit is second to none for a high production gun. 1911 Forum is a good site for more info on 1911's.
