Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Help, injection pump ?

My friends truck died yesterday and had it towed to the Dodge dealer. Was told this morning that it was the fuel injection pump and would be $2400 to repair. Does this sound right? How can it be checked? Is it difficult to put one on? Truck is a 98 or 99 with 76k

You can get an exchange pump from www.piersdiesel.com for around $1400, and it is not hard to swap them out. Don't give the dealership that kind of money for labor/parts, when you can do it yourself.

How long it take? Do you have to reprime it?

You could do it in a day. Once you get it buttoned back up, turn the key on and let the lift pump cycle. If it only cycles for 2 or 3 cycles, "bump" the starter to get it to run for 30 seconds or so. You may have to crack open number 1 and 3 injector crossover tube nut to get the air out so it will start.

Asumming that I didnt completely trust the dealer how would one check an injection pump?

You could find a local shop with a scan tool and then check the codes against the 24V Code List in the 24valve FAQ section. 0216 is a failed pump, I cannot remember all of them.
