OK guys I'm at a crossroads here. I've been considering selling my truck in favor of a new(er) half ton 4x4

Reasons to Keep Her:

1. I love the sound of my Cummins

2. It pulls like a freight train

3. I have replaced every wear part I know of except front-end stuff.

4. I get really good fuel mileage for the size truck I have (avg about 18 right now)

5. I like my truck

6. A new truck note will be $100 - $200 a month more than what I'm paying now.

7. New truck insurance should be higher

8. I have a lot of money invested in her with BOMB's

9. I'm upside down on my payments as it is

10. Won't be able to pull a cow/horse trailer anymore

Reasons to Sell

1. Would like to have a new truck

2. My truck has 164,500 miles and I'm worried that all hell is about to break loose with repairs.

3. #53 block

4. Repair totals for the last 6 months are: new VP, new LP, new clutch assy, new center carrier bearing for driveshaft for a total of about $3,500.

5. Being on unemployment sucks a fat hippo's sex organ

6. I miss the sound of a V-8 gas motor with pipes

7. I miss going mud riding

8. I miss being able to maneuver park with ease

I'm sure there are more pros and cons, but these are the most obvious and apparent to me as of now. I need some help fellas. Put yourself in my boots and tell me what you would do in this case. Looking for advice from a group of folks that love their trucks as I love mine. If I'm going to sell then I need to make up my mind and do it. if I'm going to keep it than I need to quit thinking of a new truck until I get another good job and I can afford a new Cummins (obviously I'd rather have a new Cummins but, well, money makes the world go round and it's hard to do that on arm-chair money).

Thanks fellas (and ladies),

Brian [><]

Are you insane??? I would never think of trading down to a silly little half ton girls truck!!!

My guess is you'll never be happy with a gas job after the CTD experience. I drive my wife's V-8 Dakota when I go home on weekends. It's a nice little truck but that 4. 7L v-8 even in a Dakota is absolutely GUTLESS.

Keep your real truck and save the extra cash for any repair that come along.

Keep her

Hi , you already have a lot invested, and you won't be that happy with a new one. besides that you'll be kicking yourself if you do. and also i sold my 95 with 300,000 on her never a problem, still see her around town, wish i didn't have to sell her, she was paid for. but financal problems forced sale. so after a year I was able to purchase a newer one. and this one's stayin. good luck in your choice. Ian:D :--) Oo. :-{}

I say it you need to have someone else like myself or someone other of this forum, tell you what to do with your diesel, then you should SELL it. Buy your little half ton truck, be happy and let someone who really wants a diesel buy yours.

It is also a little unusual to get what the bombs are really worth when you sell it unless the person knows all about Cummins Bombs and really wants them. Most average Joe's (and Jill's) think "modified" means less dependable.

Actually I'm looking for reasons to sell her if any. Don't plan on selling it and don't want to sell it and probably won't sell it. I just don't want to hold on to it and get burnt. Personal opinion is that if I sell it I'm gonig to be out a lot more money becasue I won't get enough money to cover what I've got in it. Just want to get differnt perspectives on it.

Sell it.

You've got no gaurantee that your injection pump won't quit again, the Dodge part is a high milage vehicle that's overdue for frontend work - ball joints, bearing hubs, tierod ends, all that.

Any day you might have expensive electrical problems with the windows, mirrors, lights, everything. Has your ECM gone out yet? Those cost a pile of money. Brakes, driveline, rust, clutch, transmission, transfer case - all are just sitting out there in the driveway smiling at you, ready to strike when you're least expecting it.

Yep, sell it, And Ride the Bus!

If you're upside-down on the truck as it is, your best option is to hang on to it, try to save the extra you would spend on the new truck payment (understandably very difficult in your position) for possible upcoming repairs. Hopefully things turn around and you can either take care of potential issues like the front end and ride it out, or trade for a newer (but not necessarily new) Cummins.

Well after considerable deliberation on the matter, the only prudent thing to do is keep it. Too much money invested in it to just tuck my tail and run. Gonna keep her until I can afford me a new(er) Cummins. :)

RH,

I have to take your request with a less then serious approach. There is no one on the forum that could accurately tell you what you should be doing. You and you alone know your situation, yes UN-employment sucks, what's new? As long as there are jobs and you work for someone else, there is going to be UN-employment. Your truck seems to be in fine shape, you seem to have kept it well and taken care of the few wear and maintenance issues that have come up. Your truck is entering it's 3-4 year, clutches wear, tires wear out that is all part of the game, and a new truck does nothing to solve those problems. The truth of the matter is, you will be much better off if you stick it out and get the damn thing paid off. Most trucks I would be worried about to many mechanical issues, but at least you have a Cummins and it has a much longer life span then any other venison.

There are way to many followers on this site, they trade there trucks off just to have something to talk about. They got rid of there 3 gens just to have a 600, and so forth. There is no future in trying to stay up with others just to be popular. These people tend to need the acceptance of others and even though this is a forum, they still have a need to be seen and talked about. Fact is most people bought their trucks because the engine was a Cummins and they knew they could rely on it for many years to come. These trucks make no since, if you are constantly trading them in every year or two. The lost you take is huge and the result is you dig yourself deeper in debit. I am not going to tell you what to do, you know that answer and you should go with it. If you feel the truck is weighing you down to much, then do what you must. But what ever you do, do what YOU should be doing, not what is popular or what others think. There are many reasons Dodge and Cummins supports forums like this one. Not only do they get to Gage the publics opinion on truck related issues, and feel out there wishes. But forums like this also drive sales of there new trucks. These forums supply the feeding frenzy that pushes many to buy.

as far as #7, and 8 in the reasons to sell i have been in the mud and if you look threw the readers rides picks so have others. And the parking thing i have seen no dif between my truck and my fathers he has a gas. I persanoly will never go back to gas for anything.

y-knot I know exactly what you mean. I guess I was trying to get the perspective from folks that tend to look at things differently. I tend to only look at the front end and immediate benefits, but when i took the time to analyze it from every angle the decision is clear to keep it, mostly for the same reasons you stated. But, when money is tight people tend to panic and look for an immediate solution, enev though it may not be a wise one.

NOOOOOOOH!

Don`t sell her. You will never tow with a gasser like you do now. As far as $ & cents go, you`ll pay more $ for less truck. The old man always told us "If you`re gonna keep it, fix it. If you`re gonna fix it, keep it. " You know what you have now. If you trade, you might end with a Dura Max or Power Stroke type experience. Keep her, you know you want to. We`re just gonna back up that choice. Don.
