Please Guys, I REALLY need some advice.

My 1998. 5 , 3500 5-Speed, is dieing.
(Scroll to bottom part of post to see Problem)

Here is the history...

This truck used to be my Dad's work truck, and had pulled 30,000Lbs daily. The Rear Wheel Speed Sensor (RWSS) went out slowly, and the odometer didn't read correctly, so we are assuming the odometer is about 25K+ miles off. Which means this truck has 100K+ Miles, though the odometer says 78K.
The only thing he EVER did to it was add fuel, change oil every 5K and add windshield wiper washer fluid, and One air cleaner.

OKAY, Please, Stay with me.

Recently, I added a 3-Gauge Full-Pillar Gauge Pod, Then replaced the T. P. S. and Lift Pump, Then added an A. T. S. Manifold. (original cracked)

NOW, as of Friday 5:00p. m. My truck is acting funny.

I let the truck sit for about 3. 5Hrs.

Got in the truck, Turned the Key to "on" let the pump prime,, Hit "START", Truck starts, and idles perfectly (Just like a CTD should #ad
)

PROBLEM IS... >> My Cummins misses HORRIBLY if I try to push the truck above 2,000 RPMS.
I had a friend Hopp in the truck, and told him to sustain 2,500-2,800RPMS, while I standed outside on Exhaust side.
The result was, LOTS of missing (couldn't get 2,500RPM), and Lots of Light-Blue Smoke.
My Uncle said it was Most Likely the Injection pump.

My Lift pump pressure Pre-Filter is 15+Lbs. idle and 10Lbs WOT.

Help, SUMMARY >> Truck Starts, and Idles Normal, after starting truck I can't get 2,000RPM+ for 2-3 Minutes. LOTS of missing and LOTS of bluish smoke.

What is it?

Anybody ever have similiar experiance?

P. S. EGT's climb excessivly fast also after truck stops missing.
Here are some REAL-WORLD numbers as of Friday Night.
3rd Gear, 2K RPM's,, WOT,, it takes 1. 5 Seconds to go from a solid 400* to a solid 600*.
Usta take ALOT longer than that from what I remember.

Should I take it in to my Dealer for an "Under Warentee" Replacement Injection pump?

If it IS my injection pump. About how long do I have till the Pump Pukes?

Really sorry 'bout the L-O-N-G Post, but wanted to get all details across.

Actually,, Dealer put a new one 'cause the Computer put a code into Memory that said it was bad.

Reason the TPS tripped the 'Puter, was cause, Silly me,, I tried to Lower the Idle down.

Change the fuel filter. Check the bowl for stuff. If that does not help go for the warranty. While at the dealer in Pahrump, NV I saw a first gen ( real POS beater ) come in and get a new 5 speed under 7 - 70.

Heck yeah, ride that warranty for what you can while you still have it. I wouldn't mention the speed sensor to them just yet.

Aw, come on now, you sure you didn't "accidentally" lose the speedometer fuse? I hate it when that happens, makes the warranty last longer #ad

An injector could be sticking or crudded up from too much idling. If cold outside, it won't run well at higher rpm until the intake air/engine warms up some.

Okay,
Thanks a bunch for the replies.

I went to Corpus Christi Tx. Today. ( 3Hr Drive 4 me) Truck was missing horribly for first 5 minutes or so, then cleared up and the CTD ran perfect for about 1. 5 miles or so. Then suddenly ran out of power. Truck could BARELY hold 50MPH in 4th.
If I pushed the clutch in and let the truck completely idle back down, It would regain all power. Then a few minutes later, I would have to do the routine over again.

I am going to take the truck into the dealer Monday Mornin' to have them look at what the problem is.

I'll let yall know what they say.

This trucks Filter was replaced less than 5,000 miles ago.
My fuel pressure post-Filter is. .
14Lbs Idle.
10Lbs WOT
12Lbs cruising (70MPH) w/10-15Lbs Boost

and. .

13Lbs Fuel, and 10Lbs Boost MAX when truck does the, "Loosing power thing"

P. S. The Boost MAX's out at 10Lbs when the power loss takes place.
((Wastegate Maybe??))

Just some thought off the top of my head. Change your fuel filter. Is your boost OK? It may not be getting enough air. Or the exhaust pipe may be partially collapsed and not letting the engine breathe well.

Have you checked the venting on your fuel cap? If air can't get in to replace the fuel going out, it will create a vacuum and cause you to lose power, although I don't know if it would cause the missing. Run with the cap off and see if anything changes.

Also, do you have a catalytic converter. If it comes apart and clogs up, similar results will happen. I have had a couple of 4 cyl. gas cars do what you describe, and they had a short CAT at the exhaust pipe. I had to take it off and clean the carbon build up out of the inside, then the problem would go away.

UpDate:

I took my truck in to my local dealer today.
I tried my best to give an accurate description of what was happening.
Service Guy said he would give me a call as soon as they found out what was wrong, and if it wasn't under warranty the charge would be only $34 for a diagnostic fee.

Here are my thoughts on what the problem is.

1. I felt all the injector lines and #6 injector seemed alot warmer than all the other lines.

2. On Cold start-up the truck Idles extremely quiet and very smooth, has nearly NO power, and has a slight blue colored exhaust smoke.

3. At Idle, If I give it any Throttle it stumbles and misses and smokes blue ALOT,
IF I can get 1,500-2,000RPM the truck has several sizable puffs of black smoke for a few seconds, then truck runs up to red line fairly quick, but is still stumbling and smoking blue HORRIBLY.
Quite a site seeing half my truck dissapear in Blueish smoke.
Wierd noise too hearing a diesel Miss like mine is. (Sounds like a VERY Muffled Backfire)

after 2-6 minutes of this Smoking-Missing-Low Power episode the problems seem to go away like magic.

*I* Think it might be an injector getting stuck.

P. S. My truck was pretty darn low on oil too.
So I changed my oil with Chevron Delo 400 15w-40 Last night. I put 3 gallons worth in it. (a little over 11qt. )

Sorry for the long post,, Need to learn how to make them shorter #ad

One More Thing.

Thanks to Everybody who has helped me try to figure out what my problem is, your help is much appreciated.

and yes, really, the WSS went out slowly.
The Speedometer worked only from 15MPH and above,
Then from 30MPH and above, after about 6 months the Speedometer only worked from 55MPH and above.

And that's how it went out, I crawled underneath my truck and pried the old sensor out, and out a new one straight from Dodge.
It was about $40.

My 98. 5 had the exact same symptoms you are describing. It turned out the crankshaft sensor was dropping out. I could get up to around 50mph with no problems and then... . no power, bucking, snorting, blue smoke, and so on. Might want to suggest this to your dealer!

Thanks Bent6, I'll call my Dealer first thing in the morinng and tell them to replace it.

BTW my fuel pressure is still amazing me.
15+Lbs idle,
10Lbs WOT.

I think the Diesel fuel treaatment I put in the tank is helping my fuel pressure a bit.
First time I have EVER put any fuel additive in this truck.

Those fuel pressure numbers seem almost a bit *too* amazing...

Combining that with your symptoms, I'm thinking along the lines of a restriction in your fuel system between the lift pump and the injection pump. Just because you have pressure dosn't mean you have flow (think about how much pressure is left in a garden hose when you barely squeeze the spray-nozzle open) Pressure is a measure of resistance to flow, and you have a lot of pressure.

Just something to check.

Did your father ever have the Ecm and Pcm rerflashed? There have been 6 software upgrades on the PCM alone since the 98. 5 was put into production.
