Hello,

I am new to TDR and have recently inherited my Dad's '99 CTD 3500 dually 4WD manual 5spd with 241K miles. We just replaced the power steering pump, vacuum pump, and front calipers and I am getting intermittent power steering and brakes. It seems like they both work at higher RPM, but I also have very sloppy steering at speed. Kind of like driving a boat, especially when I hit a bump. I am not seeing any major leaks, there is a bit of a leak that creates a small collection of fluid on the bottom of the steering gear box, but not anything noticeable on the ground. And not enough of a leak to pin point where it is originating.

Thanks in advance for any assistance

MK

Did you flush the PS fluid or just install a new pump? Is it an OEM or a chain parts store rebuild? Have you spent any time researching power steering using the search function?

Low power steering assist is a pretty common problem with these trucks at idle speeds. There are modifications you can make to improve it. As GAmes mentioned, use the search functionality and you'll find lots of reading.

As far as "drives like a boat" it sounds like it's time for new shocks. If the steering is loose get underneath and find out what's loose. Best way is to have someone else rock the wheel back and forth while you're underneath and find the slop. Pay particular attention to the track bar. All pretty easy fixes, good luck.
