Need a little help. I am going to put in a new steering shaft and rag joint this weekend and wanted to fix my steering column at the same time. The steering wheel has some up and down play in it. Is there a simple fix for this, or do you have to replace the column? Help would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem in my 1st gen. I took it to the dealer (did not have a steering wheel puller and the time)...

Said it was a common thing. (at least it is if you have tilt steering). In the colum there is a type of "U"joint (for better lack of words) that gets loose over time. All they did was tap it back in - as good as new for under $50. 00.

Hope this helps.

It is probably a bearing race that has moved out of it's seat.

If you can tap it back into position, you could either stake it or epoxy (locktite) it to keep it there.

Thanks

Jay, I sent you an email about the getrag manual as well.

How hard is the race to get to. I guess the wheel has to come off. Is it pretty self explanatory after that? I ordered a borgeson shaft and a new rag joint. Is there anything else I need for the shaft install other than patience?

Mine does the same thing and has no tilt feature. Has about a HALF inch to tell the truth. It is half way apart though and has about a 1/3 inch spacer/gasket/oring deal (which on mine is hanging on the transmission selector - nice spot for it :D

Maybe it is that thing. I just do not have a puller, and it works. I am in that "if it works, dont fix it" mode, but I get tired of hearing it rattle over small bumps on the road, so it will get done.

[arrgg..... I keep hitting ^x thinking I am sending a message in PINE ... .!]
