Hi Guys-

Need a little help with a friend’s truck. Truck is a late ’03 HO with a 6 speed and has about 90,000 miles on it. Had a Torque Dog and a tow program from a BDDL installed for about 2 weeks. Engine was washed at a quarter car wash 3 days before the problem started. While sitting at a light at idle on the way home one day, MIL light came on and the truck started idling very rough.

Came up with a P0192 “Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Low”. Uninstalled the Torque Dog, swapped out my sensor into his truck, cleared the code, made sure all connectors were dry with no water in them, truck ran great for a 3 mile test drive. Swapped his sensor back in and it worked for a short while, then the MIL returned with the P0192 and truck ran rough.

Cool, bad sensor. Run down to Cummins and pick up a new sensor and install. Reset the code and restart. MIL light now stays off but the rough idle remains. Put the stock program back in, no change. On acceleration from idle, it also has a small hesitation or stumble and a brief pinging sound. Runs fine at WOT. This problem seems to be somewhat intermitent.

Where to from here? FCA? Should I send him to the dealer to get it scanned?

All replies welcomed. Help me help him out folks.

Thanks in advance,

Thanks for the reply. All is set to stock now. The BDDL was on it's lowest setting and the Torque Dog is a very mild box. I don't think the rail was over pressured, but it could be. It was also odd to me that the problem started at idle just sitting at a light. Wierd.

Thanks again,

I'll second the FCA as a primary culprit. They seem to be very temperamental and will act up at odd times, I don't think they like the ULSD as it makes them prone to stick. Also have him check his fuel filter & even the air filter as a clogged/dirty fuel filter will cause this. Does it idle rough or does it act more like a surge? Mine would drop to 500 RPM and then surge up to 1000 while sitting at idle and often die several times while starting it first thing in the morning.

It is a rough idle. Fuel filter and air filter are almost new. I would think if it had filter problems they would be more pronounced at WOT. This problem also is happening when warm.

Thanks,

I was having a problem with Rough Idle when the truck was in Park. And sometimes Idle. With the A/C on the problem was pretty much gone. After the dealer changed out the

(2) FCA's, a CP3 and cleaning out the injectors, it still did it. I called a friend of mine at Chrysler who had another dealer check it out. In the end the replacement of the Injectors corrected the problem. I had people at TDR tell me that the injectors were bad, but because the first dealer could not find a problem with them, I kept saying they were good... sorry guys!

check the wires around the a/c compressor and make sure they are not shorting out. i found out paying $6100, 3 trips to the dodge place, 2 camshaft sensors, 2 crankshaft senors, 2 fca, 2 rail psi valves, 2 intake psi senors, 2 intake temp senors, 1 ecm, fuel tank dropped and cleaned, the whole fuel system cleaned from tank to injectors, checked lift pump psi, and add labor. i tried to drive off 3 times when they said it was fixed and it could not make it out the parking lot.

I am sorry to hear of your trouble. That is why to TDR is so well worth it. The TDR can solve most problems for free that most dealerships can't find to fix. It has saved me a bunch but on the other hand the list of parts that I "need" gets longer all the time. Case in point, I need 50hp DDP injectors. They will have to wait though.

I'll agree about the FCA, but I also agree with p-Bar too. My '03 started idling rough this past winter with about 90K on it. Only had the Banks installed for a year and I don't run it hard. I use mine mainly for the fuel mileage. Anyway, I read a lot of posts on TDR at the time about this very thing and a lot of folks cured theirs with just a fuel additive. So, before I went for a new FCA, I tried dumping some Stanadyne Performance Plus in the fuel tank. Took about two tankfuls, but that cured the rough idle. Been running nice and smooth ever since and I'm still using the Stanadyne in both mine and my wife's '04. There are a lot of guys on here like p-Bar that swear by the 2-cycle oil too. Either one only costs a couple of bucks to treat one tankful and is worth a try before shelling out $100 for a new FCA.

While I was in Ogden Ut. I stopped by Edge. I asked them if the could check out my Edge EZ Tow. They were happy to do so, and upgraded the software in the unit. The truck was running great since the injectors were changed, but since Edge upgraded the software it is even better! Seems to have a more of an "edge" to it!... :-laf
