Dumb question time here. 1992 Toyota Camry 4cyl, auto, big miles, son's car. Have no spark. It was running, but missing in gear and thought had a fuel problem, now it won't even run. Almost new plugs, plug wires. rotor, distributor cap. Coil checks out OK on an ohmmeter, new igniter (Toyotaspeak for module). Have 12+ volts to the coil. Rotor is turning, has a fairly new timing belt so no reason to think it has jumped time. There is a condenser in the distributor; could that cause it not generate a spark? Is there any way to test a condenser, since they are not available aftermarket for this car and the dealer would have to order? Thanks in advance to anyone with some help.

I am no mechanic other than turning wrenches on My Mazdas and my 1st gen dodge but,I think the condenser is there for nothing more than filtering out noise. I doubt it being bad would cause any driveability problems.

The ignitor was what I would have thought was wrong. Because in Mazdas as well as most other cars, when they go bad thing don't work. It is really nothing more than a trigger for the coil. Maybe you have a bad distributor.

I wish I could help more. Good luck.

What about crank and/or cam shaft position sensors? My wife's old grand am had them and produced similar problems when they went ffft.

I agree with XJ about the cam shaft position sensor. Another thought is... are the cap/rotor and other ignition parts OEM or aftermarket. I know it shouldn't make a difference but on my Honda, I replaced with aftermarket Bosch or ? and it blew the entire ignition system up. I think you'd notice the burnt parts if this happened...

The japanese tolerances for their ignition parts are really important.

Injectors gummed up?

I had a similar problem with my wife's 93 Camry V6. Replaced the plugs and wires with your standard aftermarket crap. It did fine for about a year and then one day it would not idle properly and kept trying to die. It would miss and sputter. My trusted mechanic told me to replace the plugs and wires with OEM equivalent and it purred like a kitten again.

I have the Chilton's manual and I will see if it has any insight into your problem.

Since the initial post I have checked the pickup coil and it was dead on according to my ohmmeter. "Ain't" working on cars and trucks fun. Thanks to all for your suggestions.
