HI All,

My 1993 W250 trans seems to have a shuddering problem when shifting from 1st gear to second gear (auto trans).....not all the time just sometimes.

Because of that we ran trans cleaner in the trans (assuming a sticking valve etc) and changed out all the fluid (put the the return line (suction?) line into a tub of new trans and discharged the old fluid into a waste container....we stopped when all the fluid looked new (FWIW the old fluid did not look bad....maybe a little darker but not burnt).

The truck still acted the same way occasionally....

With that a friend of mine (a pretty good back yard mechanic) adjusted the bands on my truck per factory instructions and turned up line line pressure a tad....I think a turn and a half if I recall correctly....the theory being something was not "grabbing" hard enough to hold the engine power hence the shudder / slip

That seemed to help things a bit (maybe)...but then he decided to adjust the TV (kickdown?) cable.....he made an adjustment one way and then the shifts seemed to get way drawn out.....the engine would rev much higher and sometimes you would even have to lift the accelerator to "coax" the shift....

Thanks wasn't really good so he readjusted it down a bit.....then the shifts would happen at a higher than normal RPM but you didnt have to rev high and let off the throttle to coax a shift....seemingly better still.

Finally, he used a hex wrench and some how adjusted the "gap" at "slider" to close to the factory spec....now the trans shifts pretty low in the RPM and I am in 3rd by about 20 or so mph....

The problem is now the trans actually slips in first (like taking off from a stop light)...and then shudders going into second and if I give it too much fuel it will slip while in second!.....What gives?.....did making the trans shift lower also somehow reduce the holding power of the bands etc?.....The truck is undrivable since I really don't want to keep slipping things and ruining the transmission (FWIW the trans was rebuilt awhile ago....of course it had intermittent issues then but I didn't drive the truck hardly at all and unfortunately I am now well out of the warranty period).

Interestingly, the truck never slips in 3rd or OD (I actuate the OD manually w/ a switch on the dash....it is not an automatic OD since the other sensor I believe bit the dust and my friend bypassed all that for a totally manual OD...on or off)....why is this?

Any ideas why the trans is acting up like this?....I researched TV cables best I could but have no idea how to know if stuff is worn out (or at least worn excessively)....I would have my friend return the truck to the adjustment before this final adjustment but unfortunately he went to jail for a probation violation so I'm kinda out of commission until I can figure out about the TV cable and even then the trans wasn't 100% just more usable.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Andrew
