Dude - we gotta talk TIGging aluminum. I still can't get it right..... I almost think I have to watch someone do it and then try it myself.

I can TIG up any of the various steels and copper... . but aluminum has been giving me some issues.

Hi Matt,

I am not the best welder out there, but a friend of mine is pretty sharp when it comes to running the TIG. I'm sure he'd show you how to do it better than I could. Gardner, Ma is not that far away. Maybe it's time for a road trip.

mumnn a/c power loss . . well im sure it does affect teh mpg and power but i can not feel any effect when driving it i do notice the egt's pre turbo drop ALOT slower with the ac on when im cooling the car off so im sure like light man says it puts a load on the engine. . but when i drive mine with the cruise on or with out if you switch betwwen a/c and no a/c it does not affect teh performance that i can tell. . best for any car i've driven besides my 550 cat ha... i've driven many a car that you HAD to turn the a/c off to drive up any of the serious hills around here at a resonable speed. . the tdi powers up no problem heck taking 1 81 down south through PA and VA heck i set teh cruise at 70 0r 75 and its funny to pass teh same cars over and over ha they pass you on teh flats but cant pull the hills and this is in cruise i just laugh... im passing them and not even touching the accel pedal ha. . the tdi holds crusie setting REALLY GOOD hardly any variance. any how. . i'll call you tonight matt hopefully you can get here friday night and we can start it hehe maybe even finich it ?? :) or at least get it done by 12 noon sat ... i'd liek to paly alittel especaillyif your splitting soon . . later

Deo - I'll stay long enough that you'll start wondering when I'm going to go home. :-laf We will have plenty of time to play with various forms of wheeled vehicles.....

This summer has come and gone WAY too quickly. I ended up working a LOT more weekends than I would have liked to... .

Matt

They=he, lol. Charlie is a good guy, provided a lot of injector nozzles for TDI'ers at a fraction of the price of full injector sets. Maybe he has some nozzles up his sleeve for the cummins? The price was nearly half that of full injector sets:D Whats up Charlie?

KERMA:

Both Deo and I have the PowerPlus '502' nozzles in our TDI's... . the supposedly 'too big for a street driven car' nozzles... . at least according to the guys at Bosio.

I think we have a LOT more room to grow with even the 502's - we're working on bigger turbo setups to burn pretty much any nozzle you can throw at us.

His is a '01 Golf, Mine's a '98 New Beetle.

His goes VERY nice with the chip - I can't wait to chip mine.

I've had your nozzles in for almost a year (still haven't pop tested them... . haha) and love the extra power. My mileage never went below 43mpg in the winter (lots of idling... ) and I average between 46 and 50 mpg in the summer... . all depends on how much I use the A/C and how heavy my right foot is.

Matt

Wait till Deo tries the "special" nozzles I gave him...

They flow about twice the stock TDI-90 fuel. The former VW-UK rally team uses them and they love them.

The 150P 502 are designed for one of the 5-cylinder models, I think the 140 hp. THey flow about the same as the 150P 520 from the 110 hp 4 banger.

"Old-school" diesel techs tend to use only the specified parts to follow the Cummins CPL for example. It's not that the 502 are "too big for a street driven car" its just that they are not "specified" for the TDI-90 or 110.

I think I am finally getting MR. B to start thinking like a hot rodder though...

I visited the factory a couple weeks ago and the level of craftsmanship and quality control is absolutely mind-boggling. I feel confident to say that there is NO nozzle manufacturer ANYWHERE on the planet with the same degree of technical capability for making or designing nozzles.

Probably sometime around the holidays look for something special for TDR types...

Of course, that is me now. I went and bought every available back issue of the TDR. Reading furiously...

KERMA: Deo told me about the new nozzles - I didn't get a chance to take a look at them this weekend.

I sort of got the feeling that the Bosio group was an OEM crowd..... I'm glad you are making them see the 'dark side'. :D

Deo and I would love to test out some Dodge injectors as well as more TDI injectors - let us know.

I'll book my flight to Italy... . I'll convince Bosio the potential the TDI has. :-laf

cool to see ya here kerma!!! sweet naw your big nozzles are still on my bench i am still waiting for my pistons to return from the local machine shop guy argh last time i looked they were still in his car argh never again with that guy in fact i might even send em out to a freidn who has a wiesco contact i was told to send them a stock set with my specs and require ments... basically 2. 5mm - 3mm more valve clearance, wider bowl reinforced bowl lip if possible, factory style bronze pin trunions, factory style bronze lower ring support, and possible raise pin height and mor offset , if i can get the bronze pieces added it would be SWEET. . if i get a raised pin going maybe 2-4mm higher then i can get longer chromemoly pauter machine rods better rod ratio... heck i'm even toying with modifing a crossflow 2. 0Lhead to become a tdi head... . welding up the chambers and plug holes and making the diesel injector seats same postion as a tdi... now tahts a BIG project but its on my horizon. . need my 220v hooked up soon for my tig welder considering holeshot is 3hrs wawy with his and soon hell be in the middle of the usa ha so i'll be on my own for tdi mods. .

later Deo

Deo - both my TIG and my plasma cutter kinda need 220V.

Power requirements aside - I need to get a lot better at welding aluminum before I can weld up heads, etc. ;)

It's 3-hours on a good day... . some crazy driver nailed the jersey barriers on the Masspike - then a Goldwing with a trailer hit that guy... . that backed up traffic for a while.

The move west isn't etched in stone yet. The TDI project(s) can continue..... logistics will be interesting, though.

Matt

i didn't say your tog and palsma cutter didn't need 220v. . just that i need 220v to use my tig welder and my aircompressor. . and i've been lazy getting teh power from the pole to the weatherhead hooked up again ha... heck the aircompressor is almost 5yrs old and still brand new in th ebox and plastic haha

Royal,

I will agree with all the positive posted here, and take issue with the negative. Anyone who can't be satisfied with the stock TDI is used to driving high performance cars and maybe wouldn't be happy with the TDI no matter how much HP it had. I have a 2001 Beetle TDI 5sp. I bought it for $99. over invoice. I drive it moderately hard and it rarely drops below 42mpg mixed driving. Like posted here, it goes up hills like few other cars. I had one of the window regulators fail. Oh, I did think of a negative... VW cupholders suck! Other than that, I can't believe no other manufacturer has seen fit to bring a similar product to North America.

All VW cup holders aren't bad.

The New Beetle has got to be the worst. You can only put a can of beer/soda in there..... anything bigger won't fit.
