Paul,

Its a 5404... ... . just received an email from Rancho confirming what the tech said on the phone. "DON'T USE THE 5404" on my rig and newer. Said they'd have one out soon. I bought the Heckethorn instead... ... ... .

Curt, thanks for the email! Thanks Ill!

Rancho RS5403 steering stabilizer

I too just bought a Rancho RS5403 steering stabilizer (it's a RS5000 with adapters) from Sam's Off Road (at their recommendation). Used the Pitman puller to get the old one out (sounded like a gunshot). The tapered adepter is short and not the right taper either. I think I'll take it off and try to return it to Sam's. The OEM seems to actually still be in excellent shape at 30k miles. Maybe I'll try one of the Rough Road or whatever if they fit right; after the OEM wears out.

I did put the Rancho 9000s on to replace all 4 shocks and it rides a whole lot better. What a pain in the butt to change those front shocks though. Wow.

PS. Have a 2001. 5 4WD.

I did the stabilizer, Bilstein shocks, Luke's Link, and front pads about 3 weeks back. The stabilizer was a piece of cake, no issues at all in getting the old one off... ..... the Heckethorn went on very easy.

WOW, what a POS the factory shocks were!!! The Bilsteins ride a little rough unloaded, but now I don't have to take dramamine for the charterboat ride the old shocks gave. The wander is pretty much gone, ride much improved, but braking still needs some work (rears).

Worst part of the whole deal was the front shocks. Make sure you have either a nice sunny day or a nice warm DRY place to work, cuz you'll be there a while!

And double check your work... ... my truck was making a loud crashing sound all the way home from my buddy's place where we did the work... ... couldn't figure it out. Finally crawled under it, and  DOH when he was doing the right rear (I was doing the brakes), he didn't hook the top of the shock up!!! No harm no foul... ...
