24v w/ p-pump in a Solid Axle 1998 S10 ZR2

Hey I'm swapping a 24v w/ P pump (913) into my 1998 S10 ZR2 here in the next couple weeks. If anyone would like to help out, it's greatly appreciated.

First & foremost, I need some info on where to get a line flaring tool & nuts for the injectors. The guys from Scheids offered to help, which I may end up doing, but just wanted to give it a try.

A little background on the project.

I'm an offroader, and the S10 is the perfect wheelbase for me. First I decided to swap out the axles for something a little more stout. SO, I got a Kingpin D60 for the front, and a corp 14 bolt for the rear (stronger than a D70). I'm running dual transfer cases, both cast iron & gear driven. . Then I decided I would need a better powerplant than the 4. 3L V6.

SO. . I decided to go for the cummins. Always wanted one.

I stumbled upon a 2001 24v for cheap, and I decided to convert it to mechanical injection to avoid the hassles of the computer.

Now that you're up to speed. .

If ya wanna help me with the project, you are more than welcome. . I would like to be done by extravaganza, but definately by the four wheel jamboree.

Thanks,

Brayden

where are you at? if you supply the beer, i will bring the sledgehammers and a blowtorch.

ps it would be cheaper buying it by the keg for me, ask Piers.

also get the lines from scheids, injector lines aint nothing like brake lines. They should be the same length and very thick walls and perfect flairs on the ends. You will need to find a metal wheelbarrel and some extra sheetmetal. I would expect the firewall will be too close, and a cut up wheelbarrel makes one heck of a new firewall. It has the curves already molded in. Body lift wouldnt hurt either. It might be easier if you pulled the cab off, put the motor, transmission in and then put the cab back on. A hoist will make this alot eaiser. Did I mention have a bunch of hammers on hand.

Thanks. . Might have to take you up on it. . Just leave the sledgehammer @ home. I work at a fab shop here in central indiana, so the tools & know how aren't a problem. Just wanted to make some friends in the diesel community. I was just wondering if these tools were available or if they are specialized tools, i. e $$$$$.

I am taking the truck down to the bare frame, doghouse & bed first. . then I'll set the motor and see what needs to be moved. Then take the cab off. . set my new trans & dual T-case crossmember along with the other tubular crossmembers I am installing. Then it's all gettin blasted & powdercoated.

The farm truck's 12v measures 30. 5" long. . My core support to firewall measures 31 @ the closest point. I think it will work Ok. . I'm building a custom core support anyways, since I'll have to make the bigger radiator & intercooler clear.

I've already got a 2" body lift. I'd rather not step up to a 3" but I will if I have to.

OK, you have put alot of thought and planning into this. I might not be much help with this because I am only good with a sledge hammer and a roll of duct tape. lol

I am near louisville, KY, how central, is central indiana.

Brayden, while Im too far to help you much. I would love to see some pics of this project as you do it! I had 3 S10's ,I always thought about doing a 350TBI swap, but a cummins would be much better. I just dont know how you are going to fit it in there.

Cummins conversion

Man thats going to be a tight fit. When I stuck the Cummins into my full size Chev it was tight. I was able to leave the firewall alone and the rad in the stock location. I used a PSD intercooler. You might concider putting the rad in the bed of the truck to make things easier. I used twin electric fans and have no heating problems at all.

If you have any questions give me a shout, What are you using for a transmission?

Malcolm

Everything from the firewall forward will be custom. I know it will be a squeeze, but we'll make it fit. I'm not going to touch the firewall. I am going to make a custom core support to house the new radiator and the 7. 3 PSD intercooler. (Are those intercoolers as good as the stock dodge?)

I am removing the inner fenderwells and fabricating new ones from aluminum. Since my axle (kingpin D60) is going to be full width I won't need much inner fenderwell.

I've taken some preliminary measurements and I think I can make it work.

As far as trannies go, I've got a few options. . My buddy has a drivetrain shop and has a NV5600. . I might go with an Allison 1000 series. I'm working on that one, we'll see what happens. I interned there during college, and I know them very well. It may not be the right choice though, since the pump I'm using is setup for about 450hp. It may live though in such a light truck. I'm shooting for under 6000lbs when I'm done. It'll be close. I'm running some BIG axles, and we're designing a 70gal fuel cell into the floor of the bed. :D Should help balance the weight across the truck, since the cummins weighs about 900 lbs.

Maybe the mod's should move this thread to the 24v tech or cummins conversion section.

Thanks in Advance,

Brayden

intercooler

I use the 7. 3 PSD intercooler and it seems to flow lots of air. I have never measured the pressure drop across it but it does have really big tubes in it. The air connections are larger than the dodge intercooler by 1/2" also. I think it works fairly well.

You know it's not that hard to wire up the Electronics for that engine. Then just add a box and injectors and you got 400+ hp.

If the engine came out of a automatic then you have to get Cummins to reflash the ECM to the manual trans version or it won't rev past 2000 rpm (approx).

Malcolm

Yeah my friends call me sparky. . I'm not afraid of the electronics. I'm afraid of the VP44. Mechanical adds that much more insurance that something isn't going to go south.

I'm going to be off-road A LOT. So it makes since to make the motor as simple as possible, i. e. mechanical injection. Plus the pump I've got lined up is setup for 450hp already, 4gsk, etc. Don't need much else.

The info on the PSD intercooler is good to hear.

I noticed you are running twins 24vchev. I just bought an Hx55w and plan on doing this sometime down the road.

:D

Gonna be there??

So Brayden how far have you got on your truck, are we going to be able to see it in Terre Haute? I cant wait to see this. It will sure gather some interest!!

I haven't gotten much further on the truck. I've been working on drivetrain stuff mainly. Like I mentioned before, I'm running dual transfer cases. I took the NP203 apart tonight and seperated the useable gear reduction part of the box from the "junk" chain drive section. I'm working on an adapter to mate the NP203 gear reduction box, to the NP205 that I'm using. Once I've got the adapter made, I'll turn the factory NP203 shaft down in the lathe then have splines cut on it to fit the female input of the NP205. Then it'll be induction hardened. Then I'm done with that step :)

The next step as far as the motor goes, is to take it down to Scheids to have the lines made up.

While the motor is away, I'll work on getting my spring hangers set, the front axle in, and the steering set up.

I'm not sure if I'll be done by the extravaganza or not, but I'm really shooting for it. We'll see.

I'm about 20 minutes north of Terre Haute, IN. I'd love to come over and take a look at what you doing. I was just in talking to JP there at the Terre Haute shop. I'm getting a few odds and ends and preparing for a VP44 swap.

PM me your phone # and I'll get a hold of you when I get the motor set. You may have been there talking to JP when I called him. :)

No update today, more transfer case work. I am getting my wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow, so no work. I'm going to try to get some stuff done this weekend though.

This is an interesting project Brayden. Post a lot of pictures. I wanna see how yours comes out.

My motorhome has some issues with the wiring harness we made. Either the MH diagram we used was inaccurate or I burned up some wires I needed in the fire. Thought I replaced them all but??????????

Anyway, It''ll turn over with the screw driver on the starter trick. But isn't starting. Probably not getting fuel. NO biggie there. Fuel shut off valve works fine with the screw driver, if I have the key in "Run".

Work has gotten in the way this week, but I'll be back at it this weekend.

Dual cases huh? I have an Isuzu Rodeo with Dual Toy cases and a Toy front straight axle. It'll crawl up anything. Almost too much torque for the diffs. Broke them both at least once.

Anyway, wish I was closer. Maybe I can bring the MH and Rodeo up to do some wheeling with you all later.
