April 18th. Gail and I are on the road with a load of horses. We are experiencing problems with our Getrag trans. I anticipate a stop for repairs somewhere along our route.

We are presently in Kansas on I-70 on our way from Colorado to Kansas City, MO – then turning south on I-35 to San Antonio via Oklahoma City and Dallas.

Does anyone along this route know someone who can work on the transmission and who is proficient in the repair of the Getrag? We are getting a lot noise and vibration in 1st and 2nd gears, with some noise in 3rd. I am told that this may be indicative of a bad bearing on the input shaft, but I am not sure…

You might check the u-joints on the rear drive shaft. On my W-350 the u-joint coming off the rear of the transfer case went bad and the truck shook kin 1st 2nd and 3rd gear. It was really bad in 1st, the entire gear shift would move side to side abouut 2 inches. A $16 u-joint fixed that problem. As far as shops, there is Bluementhals in OK City. http://www.blumenthalmfg.com/ Hope this helps.

Unfortunately if it is the input shaft bearing, you'll probably have to do the input shaft as well. For some reason Getrag designed it with the bearing race machined into the shaft, it's not removable. I just went through it last summer. I think the price on the input shaft was around $300. 00 or $350. 00 (if my memory serves me correctly, which it hasn't been doing lately).

As far as getting help on the road, go to the top of this page to "Website Features" and click on "Travel Companion". You should be able to find a vendor, or at least a member that could help in your area.

Ditto on Blumenthals. Good people top notch work, excellant warranty and they back it up. Strongly reccomend that you go ahead and install the NV4500. cheaper and better quality. I work mine very hard and quality with honesty impressed me. R C

Thanks for your response. We are going to try and make OK City, where we have friends and can board the horses and get the trans fixed.
