I could use some help/opinions about my truck. For the past 6-8 months my truck has an occasional long crank starting condidtion, and SLIGHT rough idle condition. I'm probably the only one that can feel the rough idle because it is so slight, but various fuel additives have helped a bit. Slight drop in fuel economy, but between different Smarty/TST settings, ULS diesel, it could be coincedence. I'm running Smarty at 60hp no timing newest version on their website, and TST 3x2. My truck has never seen a pressure box.

What has me concerned though, is that when I start the truck first thing in the morning, it will smoke white/gray smoke. It will not clear up while idling, or stopped in gear. For the first few miles it will continue to leave a slight haze under normal accelleration, but it is hard to tell if it is white/gray=bad or brown/gray=ok. After driving 5-10 miles 9 times out 10 the smoke at idle is gone. Power seems fine. Smoke turns black while fueling hard under low boost.

What usually goes on the injectors, the tips or the bodies? In my case I've never run a pressure box.

If it is 1 or more leaky injectors, is it bad to run the truck light duty like this for a while?

Do rail pressure relief valves fail often?

Thanks:cool:

I could never run my TST on anymore than 2/0 without draining the rail. Stacked with the Smarty, your motor was really looking for some fuel !

Talk to Todd ( TWest here ) at T&C Diesel

You may benefit from his modded rail and he could tell you more about your fueling.

I don't think your idle problems have anything to do with your rail running dry or a blown relief valve.

When I lost my relief valve, it was just down on power ... ... ... the opposite of a pressure box.

I am running a Walbro lift pump and seeing 16-22 psi under all conditions. Top end power is still there. I don't believe I am running the rail dry. Just thinking the long crank times and white smoke are from pressure bleeding from the rail while the motor is off or when idling while cold. Wether it's from a bad pressure relief valve or bad injectors, I don't know?

you may be seeing good psi on the pump pressure but, that's not showing you the RP psi. I bet you are running it real low at times.

I mentioned that because that could have caused problems with your injectors to where you're noticing it at idle now. Have you ever had the injectors out ? If so, it's also possible the feed tubes ( if not reinstalled correctly ) could have deformed and have restricted flow to the injectors.

I'm no expert... just trying to help with some suggestions. :D

Your lines connected to the rail can also be a culprit. I've seen other thread where it was found that vibration loosened the connections and caused bleed down. You can also deform the end in them if they're over torqued. IIRC, it's 22lbs at the tube and rail.
