Want to see more documentation on Smarty jr also

Here are my thoughts on the matter of obtaining more info on the Smarty Jr... This is a really great device, that definitely improves power even with carefull pedal pressure. I would like to see a flow chart in plain English that would describe the settings and maybe a guide to give examples of settings for general towing with average weights of trailers being towed. I understand that there are many combinations out there of CTD trucks with different accessories and tire combo's that pull different trailers BUT, it would be really nice to see a chart, graph, flow chart or something to reference settings of the Smarty jr. The group has been great about offering suggestions and Bob has offered some great advice but I would like to see written documentation offered by the guy who wrote the program or someother genius that could take the time and prepare something for us... Example 1: I have an 06' CTD auto trans 4x4 (free spin hub kit) with stock tires, heater delete and CFM+. I have a 3200 lb truck camper (like driving a billboard down the highway), and pull a 6000 lb trailer... I get 12 mpg hand calculated, across I 40 from Northern Cal to Dallas, mountain stretches, tail wind, head wind... I get 12 mpg at 60 mph one tank,I get 12 mpg at 65 MPH the next tank then up the speed to 70 MPH the next tank, still get 12 mpg. I set on level 2 at 75% one tank or level 3 at 90% the next tank, no difference in fuel mileage (the power is great, no problem in that arena with a light foot). I keep the smarty jr in my lap and adjust the POD % levels as I am driving - the programer is amazing. Example #2 just playing around- I am in level 2, 50% power on demand, driving down the highway flat level ground and hit a small uphill grade and the auto trans downshifts... I adjust the power on demand to 65% and it upshifts back to OD, which is great news, while watching the idiot fuel mileage readout the mileage goes up a mile or so... this is all fantastic BUT I would like to learn more about would is going on and why so I can educate myself when it comes to the low speed fueling and injector timing so I can fine tune this amazing device, if I don't dial this in, its like peeing in the wind...

Thank goodness for this thread! Thought I was going 'nuts' for not understanding the result of selecting options on my Smarty Jr.

Installed my Jr. in Jan 06 with software 5. 03C D2. 10B Updated to 5. 03D D2. 11B in Feb 06. The Jr was installed after 50HP DDP injectors (dyno 338. 5HP/623 ft-lbs). With the exception of early testing it has remained on Catcher 1.

I read the announcement of POD that indicated the unit would have to be returned to the factory with $$$ for the update (decided I did not need it). Several months ago I read a few threads that suggested POD was available as a download. As someone previously indicated, I have NOT done this since it was not clear how these new features SHOULD be utilized. I agree that knowing HOW to select/input a setting is far different from knowing WHY you are doing it and WHAT the end result will be.

Many 'moons ago' I asked why MADS did not publish HP/torque curves for each of the four Jr settings (stock, 1, 2, 3). At least with these I would have some idea of was being changed for each option. Prior posts in this thread 'hit the nail on the head'. Some form of 'Theory of Operation' is required to explain how to use the various settings with examples of when and why to use them. This is somewhat similar to the instructions for downloading new SW updates. I retired after 35+ years in the computer industry and struggled with the first update until I located the instructions developed by a user on TDR!

Final question. Should I download the POD SW using the stock settings until someone publishes information allowing me to make informed decisions on the new options? I don't mind experimenting with settings as long as I have some idea of why and what to expect.

Thanks again for the thread!!

Dave04,

It's a USB cable that connects from the smaller port on the back of the Smarty to one of the USB ports on your computer. It's the exact same cable used to connect most input/output devices to your computer (scanner and printer on my computer). Any store with computer stuff (Best Buy, Wal Mart, etc) should carry one. Make sure your computer has USB ports and take the Smarty with you (first check if you already have a cable attached to your computer).

The MADS web site has detailed instructions on how to FIRST download the USB driver THEN the software. If you have not downloaded/unzipped etc. . before, it might take a few trys (a few beers helps calm the nerves).

Good luck.

DARN, Bob beat me... ... ... .....

HHAH Thanks I got one more question?

Can one or both explain the default and 1,2,3,4 setting for timing and torque.

In cave man terms. As in power levels and what each levels does.

Currently running pro level and default on other two.

Thanks again
