The Ferd is likely to be an rpm motor rather than a low rpm torque monster like our Dodge Cummins.
Another loser is my guess.
I would have to agree... . With numbers like that, they are going to have to make a ton of it on the top end of the RPM range, and it really won't matter what they do, RPM directly affects fuel mileage. (in a VERY negative way!!!)
The fact that there is no manual transmission available FUTHER leads me to believe that this engine makes no reputable low end torque. By only offering an automatic, they can control minimum RPM at which you get direct drive (like you would get by releasing the clutch on a manual)
I'm also fairly sure it will be a minimum of a 5 speed auto, but more likely a 6 speed, allowing extremely close gearing to keep the RPM up; once again, directly affecting fuel consumption.
Its my understanding that the D-max is no longer offered with a manual either.....
All of this reminds me of a truck I had in high school. It was a 76 Chevy 1/2 ton with a 250cu. in. I-6 with a 3 on the tree, and 4:11 gears.
A buddy had the EXACT same truck except he had a 350v-8. Granted, he could out run me down the highway, when it came to pulling something, my I-6 could always out pull him and always got better fuel mileage... .
