Diesel Electric conversion for our trucks

Transporting Flatbed to Wyoming

It's going to be literally a **** pot too!! All of the new engines will have the urea injection AKA ****! We need to stop the greenies! They have too much power and are trying to stop problems that don't exist!

Green is the new Communist Red

I don't believe it. Do they think they can sell that motor with those numbers to the average consumer and have them not break it? I see another six leaker in ferd's future especially with those aluminium heads on it.

And $7,000 for a motor with only one transmission. What are they thinking? Maybe the price will scare the buyers away to the V10 and it'll die. To optimistic of me?:-laf

My $0. 02

Yep. It's also the color of our government.

The Ferd is likely to be an rpm motor rather than a low rpm torque monster like our Dodge Cummins.

Another loser is my guess.

No manual transmission choice? WTF?????? Not that I want a furd, but why would they not let the consumer who wants to change his own gears have that choice? I HATE an automatic, no matter how sophisticated or fancy. It is my CHOICE. I like to change my own gears. it is part of the fun of having a diesel truck to me. It is also the most efficient transmission (with an experienced driver like myself) and is more reliable, no matter how you look at it. I am planning on selling my Liberty eventually (which I love, except for the damn automatic) and building myself something I will love, with a MANUAL transmission diesel. WHY will the OEMs not offer us a freakin CHOICE?!? I mean, for an automatic, the Liberty's transmission is okay, but it is still not a manual, still not fun and still cannot predict the terrain ahead and react accordingly like I can with a manual. Liberty CRD + 6 speed manual would probably easily get 35 mpg. Offer us some manual trans choices folks!

I would have to agree... . With numbers like that, they are going to have to make a ton of it on the top end of the RPM range, and it really won't matter what they do, RPM directly affects fuel mileage. (in a VERY negative way!!!)

The fact that there is no manual transmission available FUTHER leads me to believe that this engine makes no reputable low end torque. By only offering an automatic, they can control minimum RPM at which you get direct drive (like you would get by releasing the clutch on a manual)

I'm also fairly sure it will be a minimum of a 5 speed auto, but more likely a 6 speed, allowing extremely close gearing to keep the RPM up; once again, directly affecting fuel consumption.

Its my understanding that the D-max is no longer offered with a manual either.....

All of this reminds me of a truck I had in high school. It was a 76 Chevy 1/2 ton with a 250cu. in. I-6 with a 3 on the tree, and 4:11 gears.

A buddy had the EXACT same truck except he had a 350v-8. Granted, he could out run me down the highway, when it came to pulling something, my I-6 could always out pull him and always got better fuel mileage... .

Yep, you simply can't beat an inline six for low rpm pulling power and inherent smoothness. That was one of the reason Chevy, Plymouth, and others continued selling inline sixes against Ferds and other brands V8 engines well into the 1950s.

When the sick ohh engine first showed up back in 2003 I was visiting my Dodge dealer and curious so I asked my salesman to let me drive a sick ohh Ferd. They are a dual dealership, side by side. He knew I owned and preferred a manual six speed so he brought out a six speed manual ferd dually. I had owned and been driving my '01 Dodge Cummins six speed dually over a year at the time and was thoroughly accustomed to putting it in second gear and letting the clutch out. It was embarrassing! I stalled the ferd numerous times. It produced zero torque at idle. It had to be driven like a small block V8 gas engine. It required revving to 2000 rpm and judicious use of the clutch to get it rolling unloaded. It was a useless engine with six speed manual transmission. That lack of low rpm torque is precisely the reason Navistar and Isuzu engines are sold with an automatic transmission.

Regardless of how good or bad this may turn out to be, I'll bet it will take the removal of more than two bolts to change the water pump. The good news is that the cab does not have to be removed for major service or repair.
