I bought my Y2K 2500 2WD w/6speed at 24K miles and transmission was making a shuttering noise when clutch released at idle throttle or when pulling a load at idle throttle. Dealer replaced clutch/throw out bearing and noise still there. Got myself a brand new Allison 6 speed at 26K miles and the noise went away. Now, 5,500 miles later(and getting close to end of warranty) the noise is starting to come back. It is back enough that the service manager acknowledges there is a problem. He says it sounds like a gear clash. It only happens for a fraction of a second when clutch pedal is released. Or, it is continuous if idling up a hill or simulating a load situation at low speed. Does not know what to do though. Star hotline recommends tearing down transmission to point of failure. I recommend calling Allison to see what was wrong with 1st transmission. They said they could not find this out?? I bet they could if they try to put another new one in the same truck 6K miles later!! I suspect there has to be something in engine (flywheel maybe) that is causing this. Dealer says he can't afford to put another transmission in it. Well, guess what, I really do not want another one! I just want it fixed. Dealer says this transmission is covered up to 38K and wants me to wait till noise gets worse before any action. I really think they want me to (fall off the earth) or move to Australia or something!!
Dealer did mention spending a day with a zone manager. Sounds good to me. I just want it fixed. I love the truck, but I traded in a 1/2ton Chevy with 220K miles that never paid one trip back to the dealer. Now, I wish I would have bought a Chevy!!
I need advice. You all are a smart bunch. Any ideas on what could be causing my transmission noise? What can be done to fix it.
What other actions do I need to do to make sure this does not linger out to the point that the problem becomes mine?
Sorry so long winded, but had a lot to say.
Thanks for the help.
