I bought my Y2K 2500 2WD w/6speed at 24K miles and transmission was making a shuttering noise when clutch released at idle throttle or when pulling a load at idle throttle. Dealer replaced clutch/throw out bearing and noise still there. Got myself a brand new Allison 6 speed at 26K miles and the noise went away. Now, 5,500 miles later(and getting close to end of warranty) the noise is starting to come back. It is back enough that the service manager acknowledges there is a problem. He says it sounds like a gear clash. It only happens for a fraction of a second when clutch pedal is released. Or, it is continuous if idling up a hill or simulating a load situation at low speed. Does not know what to do though. Star hotline recommends tearing down transmission to point of failure. I recommend calling Allison to see what was wrong with 1st transmission. They said they could not find this out?? I bet they could if they try to put another new one in the same truck 6K miles later!! I suspect there has to be something in engine (flywheel maybe) that is causing this. Dealer says he can't afford to put another transmission in it. Well, guess what, I really do not want another one! I just want it fixed. Dealer says this transmission is covered up to 38K and wants me to wait till noise gets worse before any action. I really think they want me to (fall off the earth) or move to Australia or something!!
Dealer did mention spending a day with a zone manager. Sounds good to me. I just want it fixed. I love the truck, but I traded in a 1/2ton Chevy with 220K miles that never paid one trip back to the dealer. Now, I wish I would have bought a Chevy!!

I need advice. You all are a smart bunch. Any ideas on what could be causing my transmission noise? What can be done to fix it.
What other actions do I need to do to make sure this does not linger out to the point that the problem becomes mine?
Sorry so long winded, but had a lot to say.

Thanks for the help.

Two things, first is the transmission's are New Venture. Second is the dealer doesn't have to "afford to put another one in" as DC pays the cost on warrenty work. That is unless the tech's misdiagnosed the problem.

Well Golly--My problem just became clear as mud. I have an Allison transmission where there should be a New Venture! No wonder I have a shuddering sound.
I apologize for my ignorance. In my late night crawls under the truck I have not seen either of these 2 brand names stamped on the transmission. Are they related in any way? I ask that because I spoke with the service manager again today and he clearly stated that Allison recommends... Is he calling the wrong manufacturer?
Here is what they say: This noise is "normal" in some trucks. However, the HO models of 2001. 5 do not appear to have the noise due to larger clutch splines and components and slightly different flywheels. The parts are on the way to replace my clutch, flywheel, and other necessary parts to duplicate the setup of the HO 2001. 5 model. This will also involve shimming of the starter.
I really do not understand why they would do this to my truck if Allison (or whoever they are talking to) states it to be common.
I really do not want the new components if this problem is not really a problem. I do not like people working on my truck. I can live with it if it is just a noise. However, if it is the warning signs of a failure, I want the work done.

Am I concerned about something I shouldn't be? Does everyone's 6 speed make a shuddering noise when clutch pedal is released at low RPM in 1st or 2nd?

Thanks for the advice!

hdgmartn,

A buddy of mine has the 2001 with the NEW VENTURE 6 speed (NV5600) and it does not have the gear clash. Smooooth as butter. There has never been an Allison transmission in a Dodge pickup that I know of unless it was a custom job. The only pickup out there with an Allison is the new GM Duramax. I would definitely question that dealer's credibility if he doesn't know the manufacturer of the transmission. That's like saying that your Dodge has a Navistar (a. k. a. Ford Powerstroke) engine in it.

Good Luck

My 6speed has always made a slight shuddering noise stopped w/ the clutch out. It goes away when you push it in.

After 30k miles it has gotten alot quieter, and is almost completely gone.

I started listening to other trucks, bigger ones etc. Have noticed that almost all of em have a similar noise. I wouldnt worry about it unless it is loud, or getting worse.

If my transmission tech was calling my New Venture Gear 6 speed an Allison, I would be looking for a different tech PDQ!!!

I'll just bet he is calling Allison for help!!! Yeah buddy!!
