I took a new 2500 6 spd for a test drive yesterday and we let it idle for a bit after we drove it and I noticed that after a few minutes, not sure how long, that the engine started to increase idle on its own. Must be programmed into the computer to increase idle if it idles to long or it monitors egts.

This thing is also very quite!!

proudrammer,

I asked that question at one of the seminars at the Nationals in Columbus. The answer was "no not at this time, but it could be added if there were enough requests for it".

It looks like we need to "request" a PTO type operation variable idle speed. I think I will need to "operate a hydraulic pump or a generator off my PTO". :D The Class 8 trucks set their PTO high idle speeds with the cruise control switches.

The only mention of idle speed in owner's manual refers to a gradual increase in idle speed when certain conditions are met in cold weather. Touching the service brake, taking the trans out of park or touching the throttle cancels the high idle speed. No mention on PTO speed.

Cheers, Casey

the idle went up to about 1200rpm. The temp outside was in the mid 40's and the truck was at operating temp. It was sitting for about 5 minutes max when the rpm's changed. When the clutch was depressed it went back to idle. Functioned like the high idle feature in my 02 but it must have a much better program and better parameters in the program.

Has any other '03 owners experienced the same increse in idel after their engine was ideling for about 5 minutes in 40 degree weather? If this is the case in all models... then Cummins has solved our concerns of a cylinder wash down from excessive ideling. Hopefullt this is the case

That is what the owner's manual says is the reason for the high idle.

The automatic high idle is standard on the '03 - '05. It increases the RPM automatically after two or three minutes to 1000 rpm if the engine is too cold or too hot at idle in park or neutral. If you press the gas, brake, clutch, or change gear, the idle returns to 750.

As stated above yes, the auto dile up is standard on all trucks, it's used for warmup in cold weather. If you have an auto, you can get a TSB done that allows a high feature to be used with the cruise control buttons. There are a couple others after market units out, and believe there might be one for the manual transmission.

I have both the TSB and an aftermarket high idle. Both work great!

I am very fimiliar with that operation...

I am interested in if the PTO swich can be 12v+ powered and then it goes to the DRBIII specified rpm - like 1400 --- The 1000 rpm idle is a bit low for me, It does not heat the truck very fast while I wait inside

SO, it the PTO idle thing still on the 3rd gens?

It cannot Be Done to Early O3 with software ONLY,If you want Ramp or PTO you need a module. I have loaded the Program in the 03 ECM ,the PCM ,which is a DC Part is the Problem. It"s all about communications. You Do have the cold weather feature But thats It.

Tomeygun, I have tried a manual high idle pull cable with limited success, but did notice that it really did not make much of a difference in heating the truck up no matter how high I idled it. The only way I have been able to get heat out of the truck is with my new pacbrake engaged at idle. I started the truck at -20 and let it idle with the pacbrake on. It idled up to 1000 and after 15 minutes or so of idling, it was at full operating temp!! The exhaust brake is the best thing I ever bought for my truck and I hardly do any pulling!!

Well I dont pull very much... but I knew there was a logical reason to tell my wife why I need a exhaust brake :D

"But honey... . The truck will be warm for YOU when we go to breakfast at 8 in morning... "

ok- heres the plan, While I am at it adding the pusher pump and Super"B" - may as well fab in the ex. brake too!

What I want to know (and take in mind I'm VERY new to PTO and diesel stuff) is that is there an actual PTO on the 6 spd trucks? I realize there's PTO covers on either side of the transmission... BUT can you run PTO equipment off of them?

Being as we're supposedly going to have a few more bad hurricane years down here in the 'sunshine state' it would be cheaper for me to get just the generator part of a genset and run it off the truck.

How hard would it be to do this IF there is an actual PTO?

I can manually high idle my truck with a little 'redneck' ingenuity so that's not a problem.

The gearing is there but the actual pto is not.

There are many types of pto's that will bolt up. Different hp rating , different rpm output speeds, electric engaged, manual engaged, air pressure engaged.

What direction you want the output shaft pointing.

Depends on what you're running air compressor, fuel pump, hydraulic pump.

I always thought it would a cute bomb to connect a small rated pto to 2 low volume pumps and run the tranmission fluid and rear end fluid through a couple filters.

Speaking of PTOs Is there an available air compressor that is pto driven. I need one that is, at a minimum, 12 scfm at 120 psi.

Awhile back I did some research on PTO's for our trucks. I contacted New Venture and they suggested these guys and these guys. I basically came to the conclusion that I need to win the lottery first. These are EXPENSIVE systems. It seems that you purchase the PTO gearset that bolts to the transmission, then you buy shaft-driven accessories for it. It's not hard to spend thousands on even the most basic system. It's a shame, really. I'd love to run a generator.

The pto, itself should be about 400. 00 and the accessory can vary. a fluid pump runs about 400-450.

I really need to have on-board air for my Ram. Just can't locate a air compressor to bolt onto the pto
