Figure this out...

I checked the oil right before I drained it... was about a quart low...

I had about 0. 5 quart left from a previous change that I used to fill the new filter along with a little from the 3 other gallons I had for the change...

I installed the filter and the remaining oil (basically 12. 5 quarts)... it was at half a quart low after leaving it idle and pump up for a few minutes (I also left it sit a while before checking it)...

This in itself didn't bother me. But then I placed the contents of the drain pan back into the three gallon bottles... I had a little more than 2. 5 gallons of used oil.

So where is the 2. 5 quart difference??? There's 2. 5 quarts more in the pan now than I drained out... just curious as to what everyone thinks??

You drained about 11 quarts out and the bottles really hold more than 1 gallon. If you filled the two that are full all the way full they have more than one gallon in them.

I didn't fill the bottles full because it is so cold... I didn't want them to leak when the temps warm up... I might have filled them up a little more than they come with, but there is still about a 1. 5"s of room left...

I just went down and measuered a bottle of Delo400, it was filled down 2 7/8" . The ones I have seen are filled down pretty low when new. Maybe to give you a chance to pour, I don't know. A milk jug is usually pretty close to a gallon filled about an inch down. But even they will hold over a gallon by a little because they have swelled out a little from having product in them.

Maybe that's all it was... just seems like a lot of difference... puzzled me. And I guess I still don't understand why I'm still a quart low unless the dipstick is off...

I always pour my used oil back into the empty jugs to use as "liquid girl scout" for campfires, burning brush etc ... ... ... ..... I always end up about 2 quart shy even though the dipstick doesn't show it.

Your old filter probaly has at least a half qt soaked in the filter media even after your poured it out, maybe more. It takes a while for it all to drain out of a filter.
