Some children

Oo. Excited Oo. No I am estatic about this rideOo. But I guess you could tell huh:D :D

RankRam, I have one of those (stubborn son) too. Now he is 25!! He tells me everytime I see him he doesn't like the styling on the '03's and I should have kept the '99. Lucky for me he lives near campus (instead of home).

When he was younger from 4 to 12, I would use reverse psychology. If he said he was going to jump off a cliff, I'd say OK. If I wanted him to do something I tell him not to do it. Worked great until he figured it out. Generally a very good child, just contrary. Wonder where he got that from?? must have been his mother:rolleyes:

good luck, doc

I would like to hear from you folks that went from the ETH/DEE to the HO 48re.

I have driven each and they both have their own merits.

I need all the info I can get to make an informed decision.

My two cents worth,,, on your question... . I have an HO with 48RE, vastly improved from the 47re in my last truck,,,,, Feels like my old one did with a BD tourqe converter and new valve body, and turned up line pressure... they made it exhaust brake compatible by programming the PCM to keep the TQ locked up when you remove your foot from the throttle,,,,(just like the old mystery switch did) still waiting for a BD exhaust brake,, Hope this helps...

So far, I haven't seen or heard a bad word spoken about the new auto. No regrets from me on the ho/48re combination. That truck doesn't know what a hill is at 8,000 elevation. We are just as excited as vietdoc on our new ride. He said it all.

I've noticed the 47RE in my '03 keeps the TC locked when you let your foot off the fuel pedal, must be the way they programmed all the '03's. I know my '01. 5 never did that. Sure is nice not having it unlock/lock all the time when slowing down and speeding up on the highway.

Thank's again for the nice replies!

It sure makes it difficult to decide, like I said before they are both great setups. Can't go wrong with either. :D

It was really cool to be pullin' my 5th wheel with an ATV trailer loaded behind it and having power to pass at 65 (up to 80) on a two laner. My old '01 SO 5spd LB did ok as well, but the '03 beats it all to heck, and it should. Don't miss the shifting though, but I still reach for the clutch and the shifter at times. Didn't think a person could drag race pulling two trailers. Should have seen the look on this guys face beside me on the four lane in his Chevy Silverardvark. On the road, if I didn't pay attention, I'd forget the trailers were there. I would guess I was only pulling 9k? and total length 54'. I liked backing the 5'er up with the short box too!! Seemed MUCH more easy than my '01 LB. Hit the hole next to my garage the first time. Some times it takes 20 tries. 10 mpg with trailer, 1800 miles total. I'm REAL happy with my 48RE. This thing reminds me of my '96 V-10 auto solo, but like my V-10, it doesn't do power stands at the stop light very well. ( I refuse to grow up). My only complaint so far, don't care for the new tilt wheel adjustment. Should have got SLT leather seats. The limited slip is excellent as well.

Soemone made the statement that 6 speed gets better millage, I am not so sure that is true in all cases, I know many 6 speed owners who dream of having my millage even before the upgraded transmission I think the 6 speed cruises at a higher RPM than the Auto correct me if I am wrong...

Well, I guess I'll throw my two cents in on this one since everyone else is.

It came down to what I like. I have a dually and don't pull a thing, just like it. I've been driving autos for years. Ford autos are great, Chryslers suck plane and simple, too slushy-I had one, the gear ratios are too high also. I love getting all the power to the tires and the instant acceleration in gear, no waiting for a down shift or anything, just pure power under my control.

I like to four wheel also and love the crawl ratio with the 6 speed granny low, gives me a woody.

Like I said, my two cents.

I don't think the 48RE is slushy at all. It's not at all like the old autos. However, the electronics do prevent it from doing a power stand!? Pulls a trailer GREAT! Just give it gas, er fuel and it GOES, good, even down shifts almost just right! Loaded and solo. The HO CTD 48RE runs like my old v-10, good. My cousin bought a NEW Ford PS with their new transmission and engine. He got to drive it four days the first month, engine had problems first, then the new transmission. "Best truck made". Allison seems to have it own gremlins as well, even though it's the "best auto made". Only time (and miles) will tell on the 48RE. If it goes 150-200k with scheduled maintenace and no problems, it MAY be the best auto made. We'll see.

I have no regrets on the 48re, but I never drove a 6-speed- not

really practical for local driving, mostly unloaded. The converter

is tighter than my '95 47rh, and locks up much more firmly.

Its shift schedule is perfect, and it downshifts when it should. As

was pointed out to me by another member, it also locks up in

manual "2" at about 28 mph, accompanied by a later and firmer

1-2 shift. The only complaint I have is that lock up speed in 3rd

gear is too high- about 47 mph initially, and as low as about

27 mph when throttle is resumed, as long as vehicle did not drop

below about 20 mph. Does anyone have any feedback on this?

No mention of it in the service manual.

Elite1,

That recall, discussed in other threads in great detail, only applies to those manufactured within a specific period.

BTW, when do you expect to see your new one?

Referring to the thread about the failed Automatic transmission

1) the transmission RankRam is looking at is the new 48RE.

2) The thread referred too is for the older 47RE transmission.

True I don't have 3K on our truck yet; True the load in the thread linked to seems light for even the 47RE.

None of us should take one example of a different transmission and make a blanket statement for all DC transmission's. There has been a recall for older 2003's with any automatic transmission for "the check valve" in or to/from the transmission cooler. Seems it swells and blocks the fluid flow.

The wife & I continue to find the '03 HO auto fantastic. We are pulling our 14,000 dry 5'er. Tomorrow I will add 833 lbs. of water (100 gals. ), propane, cooking things, clothes, food, wife, two dogs and head up the canyon for a week.

So far (first time and was careful) I have pulled it up moderate hills at 65; accelerated to 68 and the auto never downshifted out of overdrive.

This new auto and the HO is amazing and powerful. We get 13. 5 to 14 mpg pulling the 5er in a headwind and 17-18 mpg freeway with 15/16 mpg in town/mixed driving. Still isn't broken in!!

I continue to check the fluids as the truck is still "new" and early failures do happing.

On the subject of shifting in traffic, I actually PREFER a manual in traffic. The main thing I dislike about automatics in traffic is the lack of engine braking at slow speeds. You let up off the pedal to slow down, they upshift, and you have to hit the brakes. I feel like I'm constantly going from throttle to brake to throttle to brake. With a manual (and paying some attention to what's going on ahead) I rarely need to hit the brakes, I just let up off the throttle. The only times I wish I had an automatic in traffic are when it is stoplight after stoplight (continual rowing through the gears) and when traffic is crawling slower than first gear can take you (which, with a granny gear, is rare around here).

Wow! I get about 18. 5 in town but got 10 - 12. 5 mpg this weekend towing my 3600 lbs. travel trailer! The wind was actually a direct crosswind. Your trailer weighs a lot more than mine.
