Kenny ... I've actually been in contact with 3 vendors:

I walked into Cummins Rocky Mountain LLC, 775-331-4983. Nada & that's what I referenced above.

I also walked into Sierra Diesel Injection, 775-329-4432. He refused to look them up. He wanted to lecture me on adding fuel & changing turbos. I couldn't get him to look up the part #'s.

I just called Peterbuilt, he just said all 3 part #'s are bad.

Heehehehehe! Back in the day, I made the mistake of mentioning Bruce Mallisons(one of the original Big Power Cummins shops, for you newbies) name and the parts I had ordered, in a Cummins booth at a trade show. The Cummins rep went OFF, preaching about how BOMBing is a no- no!!!! :D

You'd swear he was my grandmother lecturing on why you shouldn't be out with the town tramp!!LOl :D

kenny: will the outlet on the 40 need an adapter to make the 90 degree bend to the intercooler pipe? and are the oil inlet and drain fittings the same as on the hy35. thanks RAY

HH,

Excellent question about the oiling of the 40. I scored the bearings on 4 HX40s in a row. The last one had the oiling mod from Piers and I blew the exhaust wheel out of the tailpipe. None of them lasted over 10K miles. This was a single on a 1995 truck, 175 pump with lots of fuel down low. Granted my 03 doesn't have the fuel down low like the 95 did. But if I ever get a 40 for this truck and it blows they will have to put me in a straight jacket.

Maybe I needed twins but 2 of the 40s were DOA and lasted about 10 miles. The bearings were oil starved somehow and contacted the shaft, shaft scored the bearings, comp wheel chewed the housing up. I pre-lubed them all with a generous amount of oil and broke them in gently (<50% throttle).

I am excited about these new products and I am not bashing, maybe I had a string of bad luck. We all want to know if these new turbos are going to hold up to what the members of this board can dish out. I am still a Holset fan!

BTW, I went back to the stock HX35-12 and put 20K more hard miles on it. It was still running strong when I sold the truck.

OK,

Forrest you need to contact a Holset Aftermarket Distiributor, not Cummins. Go to www.holset.com and there is a search engine to find the one closet to you.

4wheels smoking, yes you will need a 90 degree adapter to go from the comp outlet. Oil fittings are the same.

Cooker, the exhaust flange on HX40 come in full marmon(beveled) and half marmon(flat). The Super40 has a full marmon since there are both types of downpipes on the market. If you already have a flat flanged downpipe, about 20 bucks at your local machine shop and you can have the flat flange on the turbo.

Diesel Power Man, the Super40 oiling system is more than adequate as long as you don't overspeed it beyond 130K rpm. I'm not sure how your truck is set up but I have HX40s that have been running for 40-50K miles. From your story it sounds like you did have a string of bad luck. Just remember, heat and lack of oil are turbo killers.

Thanks Kenny.

Since then, I got 2 quotes, the best being from the TORQUE THIS source above. Oo.

If I get one of these 2, I'm carrying it into Sierra Diesel Injection, with the proper lube. :-laf

i spoke with a pro about the super 40 he said everything is the same but the compressor wheel and said you will pop this 40 just like you can a stock 40. he said on a fueled up cummins one real good stab to it and you are spinning 190K rpms more than enough to pop one. sounds like a no go for me on the super 40 in a single application. but if i could get away with it the price is right!

this guy worked for holset before opening his own shop. i dont know how he measured speed but i imagine holset has a way ;). he said you can run a 52 but towing it would suck (laggy). let us know how the super 40 does it can be had for a little over 700 bones!

A Super 40 for $700 and some dollars? That seems pretty reasonable IMHO, assuming this it is a step forward from the original HX40.

By the way, the part numbers are as follows:

Super40 -- 4027888

Pro52 -- 4027895

Pro52 adapter -- 4038822

What is the Pro52 adapter?? and does the 52 have the same footprint... If the 52 is too laggy for towing. . is there a smaller housing. . (something tells me there isn't. ) Or would that be too restrictive... . Maybe need to step down a little??

Just curious... .

Bryan, the 52 has a 16 housing non W/G and it is a big foot or a T04 flange, the other little turbo's use a small foot or T03 flange. The spacer should be a 03 to 04 flange or you could build one using a T03 and T04 flange and a piece of 2x3 square tubing cut down.

Thanks Jim. . That's what I figured... Yes the adapter would be easy to build. . and if I went that route I would set it up for an Ex Wastegate. . I just don't know what laggy is... everyone has their own opinion... and I do hual. . (the reason I was curious to see if there was such a thing as a 14 housing for the 52. . and limit the drive pressure with an ex-gate. ) the Sup40 would probably fit my bill a little better. . just want to buy one Turbo. . not have to upgrade later. .

Thanks

Bryan

I'm hoping to get the 52 shipped to me by the beginning of next week, I'll work hard to get it in ASAP and give results.

Laggy is defined different by everyone...
