I put the 4" exhaust on today- had some leftovers from a neighbor putting a new exhaust from his 318 Detroit. I went with a 4" elbow at the bottom of the downpipe (kind of regret not measuring THAT all the way thru, but it is on there, six welding rods later), then about 3' of flex stuff, then a few feet of straight pipe, then the muffler, such as it is; dumps right in front of the rear axle.
All I can say is I had NO IDEA how restrictive the stock system is. The boost gauge climbed steadily in a nice sweeping arc, to about 30-38 psi, depending on the gear and how far I mashed the pedal; now it JUMPS to 35+ in 3-5 gears. EGTS seem to be flakier- they go up faster and a little higher
, but come down a goodly bit faster. Pickup definitely has a different tone- I can hear the turbo at idle just fine. At about 3psi, it souds like we all are going to go into orbit
MPGs will drop to about 16 for this tank, for sure. I have mixed emotions about the upgrade overall, but it does help out in the bottom to mid power band, regardless of what some performance gurus wil tell you. One drawback is, EVERYONE wants to run me now that the turbo can be heard a mile away. I have obliged a few (GMC 1/2t auto, glasspacks; some ricer [SMOKED his butt]), and been outrun only by a Mcustang GT (remember, I have a Getrag that you have to wait a week between gears for everything to spin down. ) I can burn the tires on a 2nd gear start. Waiting for the clutch to start complaining.
Now for an intercooler; I have everything to install it. Except for, of course, the cooler itself. Then I wll be like
Oo.
Oo. Those of you on the fence about whether to go 4" or not, get off the fence and join us on the dark side
