Home heating oil?

Will home heating oil (diesel #1 I think) hurt our trucks? I do believe though that the truck will get worse mielage, but I may be able to justify that if it only costs 2. 50 a gallon insead of 3. 25 pg ULSD crappy fuel.



Any other thoughts? I figured I'd set up a 500 gallon tank at my house and just fuel up there. Probably breaking all sorts of federal BS laws, huh... .

Home heating oil is the same as #2 diesel but is dyed red since there are no road taxes paid on it. It will burn fine! But, the fines for running it on the road are steep if you get caught.

You go right ahead, my fellow Alaskan, and put red home heating oil in your CTD. Sometime this coming winter you can expect your fuel to be the consistency of jello.

i've been running home heating oil in my truck since 2000! almost every tank! summer and winter. you wont have any problems, just dont get caught! make sure you treat the oil with anti-gel stuf in the cold months. i also think the only way you would get cought is if you were an over the roader and running across scales. last time i filled my 500gallon tank it was $2. 33/gallon! alot better then $3. 00! got my 20 GPM eletric pump on ebay for $200. put a good filter on it and all has been great. has paid for it self 10 times over by now!... james

Just FYI, not all HHO is dyed red... the stuff my parent-in-law's get is not dyed.



I thought it was all dyed at one point too, but is seems there might be a loophole with HHO... maybe just an onroad/offroad thing?

HHO is not dyed low sulfur #2... it's still a high sulfur fuel. Around here anyway. If you know the distributor, you could probably get undyed, non-taxed LSD for your tank. Sometimes they "forget" to add the dye at the refinery when the truck is loaded.

I, by accident, filled up with Ag Diesel at a pump in Fort Larned, KS. It was red and I dropped down to 11MPG with it, towing our trailer. I ran the tank dry and filled up in La Junta, CO with regular #2. My mileage jumped back up to 18MPG. I don't know what else is in that Ag fuel besides red dye, but my truck sure didn't like it.

I ran the tank dry and filled up in La Junta, CO with regular #2. My mileage jumped back up to 18MPG. I don't know what else is in that Ag fuel besides red dye, but my truck sure didn't like it.

A lot of times it isn't fresh because there isn't much call for it... especially at a "road" pump... most farmers have it delivered... that would be my guess is that it was "old" fuel.

It's not very often that HHO gells up back home (Maine) and it hits -30/-40 in the winter... . that's with the tank outside, like a trailer house.

My main concern is this ULSD that's due out October 15th. Rumor has it that it's going to cost us . 25 cents more a gallon.



I'd like to try veggie, but I think it's too much of a hassle for now. Oo.

It showed on the news a few days ago in Seattle, state troopers dipping tanks for heatung oil. i think it was vehicles waiting for the ferry. they said the fine was $1000. i guess when the call for heating oil goes up three fold in Aug. and sept. they get suspicious

I never saw a differance in my truck ,but my father has a 6. 5L in his delivery truck and said he noticed a differance when he ran red.



Also about 2 years ago i was talking to a "certain" diesel shop and they said that the chevy 6. 5L doesnt like the red dye because of some kind of electronic eye that sees the fuel

I thought #1 HHO was kerosene and #2 HHO was diesel.

I don't believe Kerosene uses the red dye like #2 HHO.

Kerosene is #1 fuel

Diesel is #2 fuel

Red dye is just that. Red Dye it does not designate the diesel value (1 or 2).

Typically it is #2 pump diesel dyed red for off road use (ag etc).



One could run Kerosene but you would have to add about 5-10% lube oil to meet the lube specs of #2 since Kero is very dry natured.

Also, with the Kero the BTU's will be less and cetane also at a lesser value.

I only noticed a 1 mpg drop... . at the time diesel was $3. 57 a gallon and Kero was a $1. 99 a gallon... . I'll take the 1 mpg drop! :-laf

the only way red dye will cause poor mileage is if it is old as the other person said. i fill up at home out of the farm tank and get the same mileage as with the green fuel
