I'm having a problem with my horn, it blows when the truck ignition is off but when I start up the truck and drive down the road a ways I try the horn and it won't blow and when I get back home and cut the ignition off. I try the horn . . It work fine can anyone tell me what might be causing the horn to do this. .

Recently mine started blowing and wouldn't stop until I unplugged the horns. I took apart the airbag assembly and found that when they did the clock spring recall that they pinched the horn wire causing it to chaf and eventually ground out. I was able to put heat shrink over it to fix it. Good thing the horn switches and air bag are one assembly and it costs a butt-ton. Maybe yours is similar and they messed up the wire, still doesn't explain why it works sometimes. Have you tried to swap out the relay on the inner fender? I would start there.

Can you tell me how you went about taking the cover off the steering wheel to get to the wire that was chaffed, is the two small bolts behind the steering wheel the ones that holds it on. and is there any danger of the air bag inflating accidentally, do I have to disconnect battery ???? I'm thinking that I also have a pinched wire and it causing my problem. . The relay seems ok. .

Thanks A lot,

Bill

Clockspring

Do not fool around with this unit- take it to the dealer. Your clockspring may not be functioning and even if it is playing around there can cause problems that interfere with functioning of the air bags- the dealer will probably cover these issues even past the warranty period because they have a recall on a lot of these.

The manual tells you to disconnect the battery and wait 5 minutes to let the airbag circuit discharge then remove the bolts on the back of the steering wheel and pull it off, there are two wire connections back there so don't just rip it off, they need to be disconnected after the bolts are off. As long as the batteries are disconnected you won't set off the airbag. Your problem does sound a little more involved than this though but it's worth a shot. I probably wouldn't have done it myself unless I had a manual to look at, they definantly help. As far as I am concerned the $100 cost of a factory service manual paid for itself when I fixed this problem because I know the dealer would have replaced the whole airbag assembly for a cost of about $1000 and my warranty is expired.

If you have never seen an airbag explode close up, I watched the Fire Department intentionally set some off. The airbag can easily easily injure you. I won't mess near an airbag
