I have read what seafish posted also. Your in a prime environment for something like that. Put in some new batteries and check voltages while running a few times. They should read very close.

I only ran it in the winter the first 3 years I owned it. Other than that it has been stored winters away from the corrosion BUT I will still check the crossover cable and split the insulation if I have any doubts.

But it was fine this morning all 63 miles to work and then most of the way home tonight. Smell started about 10 miles away from home so I'm leaning towards a bad / shorted battery.....

Mike; Sorry for the battery issue yesterday, when it "rains it pours". Never fails that when you have a major trip planned something will go wrong MR. Murphy always seem to be about.

I have had very good luck with "NAPA" batteries in my truck and the trailer. I know some don't like them, but I had a friend that worked for Johnson Controls that made batteries. He stated that you could not go wrong with NAPA batteries and you can always find a NAPA store around.

On all of my vehicles that have had a two battery system such as our RAM trucks I have always replaced both batteries when one went bad. It just seem to me that if you just replaced one battery the older battery would cause the new battery to fail prematurely.

I know when I was at Cat. the electrical team would always replace all of the batteries on a new machine if one proved to be malfunctioning. Anywhere from 2 to 4-12volt batteries would be scrapped. They would never take the chance that malfunction battery had not damaged one of the remaining batteries that were good on that machine.

Sending the Parts Runner over to CAT this morning, have a brand new pair set out for me.

Yes, all batteries should be replaced at once in a multi-battery system. No doubt about it...

I had the same thing happen on my 3rd gen. Pass battery boiled and was low on voltage. 2 new Deka batteries fixed it. I checked the crossover by reading voltage while running. The drivers battery was charging within .1 volts of the passenger side. Lasted another 200K for me and 40K + for the new owner.

^^^ Well that is certainly is an easier way to check the cable then cutting back the insulation though I would be wary if any more then .1 volt difference and also would be sure to use a quality DVM.
That being said, in and of itself, it is not difficult to carefully slice the insulation and then tape it back back together.
Some of the pix showing the corrosion underneath the insulation are simply mind blowing due to the AMOUNT of corrosion. NOT sure if Chrysler used some under par wire, or if other factors are involved in those cable that DO corrode, but it is a relatively common occurrence on our trucks. Well, I am not sure if "common" is the right wiord or not, but it certainly HAPPENS!!!

Exactly!!! That's why I'm not complaining in the slightest....so glad it took place during a shakedown run on my home turf.....

Your good when you are on this side of PA. I've got a friend with 2 medium duty rollbacks. Of course, AAA would be several hours quicker on Rt-80. But it's the thought that counts. :)
