Got about 18,000 miles on my truck, but noticed

this habit of it since I've had it: After running

on the freeway for say a few hours, then stop at a

roadside quickmart, stop the engine, pop inside

for less than 5 minutes, crank the truck and it

doesn't fire right up.

Usually takes at least two extended cranks (~2

secs each). The truck usually fires up instantly

every morning, almost like just a couple of turns

on the motor at most.

When I stop off for an extended stop, like to eat

lunch or something, it seems to fire back up OK.

I also usually don't kill the motor when I refuel,

partly to avoid dealing with the restart hesitation.

Doesn't sound like a serious thing, an annoyance

at best that can be worked around, just wondering

if there is something to this or should I let the

motor idle longer before I shut it down? I know

my Case tractor says to idle it before shutdown to

cool the turbo, but I sometimes forget, shut it

down, hop out to clean the plow, get back in and

it cranks right back OK.

I believe there is a TSB for this. A buddy had the same problem with his truck and they reflashed the ECM and all was well with the world. Check dave fritz's web site, he has all the TSB's listed for our trucks. There is a link to in in the links section.

Good luck.

Uh-Oh. If it's what I think it is, you're about to have a nightmare. This just happened to the machine that I operate at work. In the morning, it would start instantly. At lunch, I had to crank it for 30-45 seconds. Then it got to where I had to use ether to start it as it progressivly got worse. Turns out, the injection pump got weak, then finally self destructed.

GET DC TO CHECK YOUR INJECTION PUMP IMEDIATELY!!!!

I went and found the TSB that exists for hard start when engine is hot...

Hard Start when Hot

This may help, but the injection pump is another source of concern, I would get it checked out soon.

PROBLEM SOLVED:

Thanks to all that replied, got the dealer

to reflash ECM with update and alls well!

This truck and this site are awesome!

Have to admit, I was a Ford diehard, but have a fleet of Cummins on the farm: 2 B5. 9s, a 505 and a

N14, so that and the response like I got from TDR was a decision to buy the Cummins Dodge, and so far it was worth it!

This was the first dealer service since I drove it off the lot, other than something that was there to start with...

First day, alternator went out, now ECM upgrade, not bad in my opinion, keep truckin, Cummins Dodge!

Thanks to all,

JD
