Gary,

When I changed my pump I spun the shaft, there was little resistance. It felt as though I was hitting some sort of lobes, much like you described.

The original did it, and the new HRVP felt identical.

By the way, just over 10,000 miles on my industrial injection Hot Rod pump so far. I don't think there's any reason that it shouldn't last as long or longer than the original.

AH!

Matt, I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate your response! I've tried in *3* different threads to get the info you just supplied, and in each case, there was a "rebuilder" active in the thread - and STILL, in spite of direct questioning, as in THIS thread, they would not/could not respond!

I was beginning to suspect maybe all they really do is answer the phone and take orders, but have no direct hands-on experience with the actual pumps...

This info was very important to me, since after buying my particular pump, even at an excellent price, It sorta nags at you as to whether it will actually FUNCTION as expected when/if it IS needed for a backup!

Thanks again.

Re: Vp44

I am sorry I did not answer your question about what pumps do or feel like when spun over. The answer that was given already is the way they feel and sound like. If the pump you are trying to decide about stops turning hard or if when you turn it over you hear metal or parts loose inside don't take it. But the biggest problems with used injection pumps (VP44) is they are prone to get massive water inside. You can in no way see or feel that. Also most pumps that are not on engines are usually bad any way. You are basically rolling the dice! I know it sounds like what pump guys will always say but it is true. We give a 1 year unlimited mileage warranty with our pumps. As far as the clipped wire and how it affects warranty, Cummins and Dodge will not warranty such pumps. Bosch will not warranty a pump or a brain box (PSG) that has a clipped wire. We would warranty any mechanical failures but would have to charge for a brain box if the wire is clipped. Bosch will not pay us warranty on a PSG that is clipped. That is when we can some times use a good used brain box we have in reserve to help our customers. We do try to help in as many ways as possible.

Re: Psg Failures

Bosch made the whole injection pump to Cummins specs. Cummins signed off on the pump. Later on Cummins asked Bosch to make a PSG to a higher spec. What and why I won't speculate on that.

So Bosch will warrenty the PSG seperatly from a whole pump?

Are the modified (hot rod type) pumps still warrentable from bosch?

Is it possible to send a pump in with electrical issues to get a used but good PSG box installed and calibrated?

Thank you again for your time.

So basically, what's the trick in keeping these pumps alive? plenty of pressure( above 8psi)? a good fuel additive? I've had both the lift pump and the vp replaced, I try to keep my pressure at 8 or higher, and run stanadyne at every fillup. There's no guarantee is there.

Big A

I think good fuel pressure to the pump is part of it. But there still needs to be a reliable way to keep the electronics on the pump cool.

When the truck is running, it is ok, cause fuel is flowing under the brains, but when the truck is shut off, there is no fuel flow, so a lot of engine heat is soaked into the computer.

Can any one comment on the special Fed-ex electronics that is referenced by blue chip does it exist or is this just bs?

???

What is the "Fed-ex electronics"? This is the first I have heard of it - or is that the "improved" VP-44 brain board Brett refers to further above?

THANKS for the pointer again Jared - I had missed it earlier - I still wonder if that is the same board upgrade Brett was referring to - it sure sounds worth having!

I wonder if Bosch themselves ever incorporated them into their main production at some point, rather than just for Fed-ex?

Is this the same board that all of the rebuilders are using or is it unique to blue chip? Other rebuilders claim that they have an updated computer but is this the same as this fed-ex computer. Is there a bosch part number for this computer so my local pump guy can buy one?

Re: Vp44

Just wanted to note to you that we use only the most updated pump housing and PSG's (brain box). The latest pump housing incorporates a STEEL bushing which has been flawless todate. The BRASS bushing housings have had failures. The PSG that we install is the updated one that FedEx has been receiving. Thanks www.industrialinjection.com

Brett, I hope you read this and will post a response:

Does Bosch use the "Upgraded/Fed-ex" PSG *ONLY* on Fed-ex equipment, or did they at some point in later production use that PSG on ALL their VP-44's being manufactured?

Considering all the failures, seems sorta stupid to NOT put such a low cost upgrade in ALL subsequent units, rather than a select few...

Re: Vp44

All VP44 PSG's have been updated to the one part# which is the FedEX electronics that you have heard about. Bosch did this at Cummins request.

Brett, thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. I look forward to doing business with your company.

ABSOLUTELY!

I've learned a great deal from the new VP-44 material this thread presented - THIS is what this board does BEST! ;)
